I think you are onto something. I remember listening to an interview with the director of British Cycling (Dave Brailsford?) and he went on at length about promoting "incremental gains". This is the practice of paying attention to tiny, nitpicking details that taken as a whole lead to a team performing at peak condition. One of these was that the cycling team had extensively researched the best pillow for each individual member to ensure the best sleep. This would sound as though it is along those lines.
I have a mad theory that "own pillow" is thinly disguised shorthand for "sportsman's (or woman) favourite cuddly toy that they would be ashamed for anyone to know about.
