Interesting article in Telegraph, behind pay wall, asking this question especially in relation to Mo Farrah and Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy etc. I have to agree, by comparison, DT (and his big G) definitely rank above IMHO.

Plus his C64 game was ace!

The same reason it wasn’t Sir Bob Paisley, Sir Joe Fagan, Sir Brian Clough or Sir Tony Barton.

Sporting achievements were not handed out as populist breadcrumbs by the establishment in those days.

Maybe it's as simple as Daley Thompson doesn't agree with the honours list and has refused the knighthood.

That said it's probably not the case for Daley Thompson CBE.

Wowsers - I actually fact checked before posting.

Basically, there was increasing concern as to why Knighthoods were always handed to posh people who had political affiliation.

So they started handing lesser honours out to worthy folk as well as handing Knighthoods to posh people who had political affiliation.

Then they thought that as we all watch sport they would give Knighthoods to folks who had won stuff. And lesser honours to cricketers who played in a winning Ashes series and didn't do very well.

But Knighthoods still go to posh people with political affiliation. They just think we're a bit stupid.

sounds about right. usually needed to do charity work to get a KBE, nowadays sport itself seems sufficent.

Given the motley crew who get any kind of honours these days, he’s best off without one. Who’d want to be associated with the bunch of current crop of Lords, Knights and other no marks who accept honours.
