[Albion] Why haven't we had any penalties yet?

Over the last four seasons we have had 6, 6, 7 and 8 Premier League penalties, meaning we average one every five-and-a-bit games.

We've not had one yet this season, and we're not too far off the halfway mark.

Is there something about our play that means we're less likely to get one, or is it just an anomaly / small sample size?

Bournemouth have had 5 and Liverpool 4. Even bloody Southampton have had 2.

But on a serious note, I don’t think I can really recall an obvious one we haven’t been given.

Because we work the ball wide and then aimlessly cross it into the box. The wingers and Mitoma in particular always used to drive into the box at pace and cause problems, we now don’t for some reason.

His arm was moving up towards the ball as I remember it…. Everyone is forever trying to defend with their hands behind their back for that very reason

I saw it and thought there was no way it would called by VAR. Not enough in it.

This. We don’t force defenders to commit to challenges/blocks in the box because we seem to be intent at times at scoring the “perfect” team goal rather than sometimes running or playing the ball into the penalty area and see if we get a bit of luck at times.

Arguably the main reason we flopped on Sunday, one of them anyway. We weren't even taking half chances at 3-0 down, so insistent were we on everything lining up perfectly.

5 other teams have registered nil on pen score.

Something we often forget is randomness; if you take 10 seasons average 5 pens per season, there will most likely be one or two with 1-3 pens and one or two 7-10. That's how it works (and TB's mathematical genius is to understand this in many respects). Not sure there is anything to see here.

We stay on our feet when there is contact and could have gone to ground like a lot of other team's players would have done in that situation.

Mitoma for example, in the box on Sunday, with his back to goal near the edge of the penalty area at the south end of the ground had several attempts by the palace player to barge him in the back for which he could easily have gone down under such a challenge and drawn a penalty, but instead he stayed on his feet. (something a lot of our fan base would rather see than buying cheap free kicks and penalties)

off-topic but that really infuriated me on sunday. so often we were stood there, fannying around before trying to get it into a packed palace box when we had no natural 9 on the pitch until ferguson came on. felt like i was having my head slammed into a brick wall repeatedly
