Why can't we do this in Britain?

And the service to the public has got 100% worse. There's a link here somewhere. If only I had the funds to research it like a professional comedian.

Well as I work for neither a TOC or Network Rail I think I can live with it.

Thats probably because they dont give a f*** about passengers these days it's all about performance.

I was once stuck on a train outside Tottenham Hale for about 2 hours. One of our complaints was that they should have pulled into Northumberland Road and let us off. The line we were given was that to do this it would have cost the rail company 15k due to an unscheduled stop (i.e. this stop would have been outside the scope of the contract with Railtrack and therefore chargable). I find this appalling.

Does'nt surprise me in the least, There's been many times at work when during service disruption that I've wanted to do certain things with trains to get things moving better, But if I do it without the agreement of the train operating company concerned then network Rail get fined on the back of my decisions. But if you ask one of the train operating companies what they want doing you can be waiting 10 minute's for some idiot to make a decision. The whole system is shit.

One thing I miss about BR is that most people who worked on the railways were old stalwarts with a love of rail, hundreds of enamel badges and encyclopedic knowledge of train times and connections. It isnt like this anymore.

Yes. Have you noticed that some of these characters are now amongst the Albion's most loyal fans? Keeps alive Brighton's old tradition of being a railway town1

This thread slightly depresses me because I remember Portuguese Railways, in the early 80s, timetabling a stop so that everyone could pile out of the train to eat their lunch. I suspect that the line between Valenca do Minho and Viana do Castelho no longer operates in this way.

I am aware of a few old-school railway people who are loyal Albion fans. Also, my grandfather worked on the railways in London (New Cross I think) and took a transfer to Brighton.....which is why I am here and a Brighton fan.
