[Football] Who’s not watching the World Cup?

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat

I didn't find any numbers in this article. the article I posted earlier talked about 4000 deaths but the numbers are impossible to state. What is clear is that no-one really knows the number of deaths.

Equidem are pretty damning about the way workers are treated.

I am like you though even a conservative number is enough to be push it over the line for me. Especially when added to the treatment of workers and everything else.
That article relates to hotels and doesn't mention the stadia construction.

So, what have people been doing with their time during this enforced break for the ‘Qatari Death Bauble’?

I’ve found FM2023 a useful distraction and worked a bit more than usual.

Normally I’d try to get outside more, but combinations of hail, torrential rain and high winds have made that less pleasant than it should be.

I would try and get your facts right. The 6500 number is just plain wrong. I'm surprised the guardian haven't retracted that.
Firstly, I am one who is watching the world cup and supporting england however you need to check your facts. The 6500 is backed up by official documents. The Qataris claiming is only 3 that have died. Also, it's not just the deaths but the conditions for migrant workers with reports employers hold their passports and they have to get permission from their existing employer to go home or even to change jobs!

Work is much quieter than usual. Makes it easier.

Tidied up my phone which was full of EE trying to flog stuff so I've got more space on it now.

Clothes washing up to date.

Shopping when England play. Sainsbury's is a dream with it feeling like I've got the whole store to myself. Monday only took 50 minutes when it's normally 1h 20mins roughly.

I'm not, and I'm absolutely gutted not to be. Of all the nonsense which modern football has foisted on us, this is the worst.
Really looking forward to Worthing v Chelmsford on Saturday and to joining the Whitehawk Ultras (a bit of St Pauli in East Brighton) for their next few home games.

Qatar doesn't matter when you're singing with the Ultras
I'll always be a Seagull but grass roots is the best
And if you come to Whitehawk you'll get your apples pressed' :)

Not sure I understand. FIFA are the problem but you'll go back to other tournaments? Like the US / Canada / Mexico fest in 2026?

US construction death rates are pretty grim reading.
i find it somewhat ironic that you banned me from a thread on horse racing when I posted my disagreement with the “sport”. Apparently that thread was only for those that supported the OP.

This thread is clearly directed at those who won’t be watching the World Cup, for whatever reason, yet you are on here disrupting the thread.

As I said to BadFish I'm replying to people who have quoted me and asked questions. And you've just done it (passive aggressively) again

Anyway, back to Uruguay v S Korea :salute:

Don't you think that the World Cup belongs to the people of the World? It doesn't belong to FIFA, or to to the Qatar government, or to any of the uber-rich multi-national sponsors. f*** FIFA, f*** the rulers of Qatar, I'm not going to let them take away my enjoyment of the people's game. If Qatar want to spend 200 billion on hosting the games whilst exposing their human rights abuses to the world, then let the twats do that. This is our World Cup, not theirs, I'm going to support our team and enjoy the rest of the matches (whilst also going to watch my daughter play in the 5th tier of the English league on Sundays).

But it’s not. Corruption won and continues to win. This WC is totally different, sickens on every level and I’m completely switched off from. Cannot muster any enthusiasm for when normally I’d be really excited. I’m far from alone. Scores of friends in same boat. Nobody having parties, gatherings, bothering to tune in, doing stickers, buying papers…Real shame, but then it’s a sham and FIFA/Qatar brought this on themselves. I’d like to think those that created this mess versus those that now govern are different. But there not are they? Same old same old types…Sociopaths in a nutshell. They always rise to the top because they’re devoid of an emotional intelligence and stop at nothing along the way. 10,000 lives to build stadiums? No problem, that’s cheap at half the price!

I get it, I do, but I think its just letting them win. We didn't choose this country to host the world cup, but thats not out fault, the fans nor the players, its still the world cup, the peoples game, not the suits' game, and that's how I'm treating it.

I totally get this argument. I am not criticising anybody who watches it, I just feel totally alienated, an amplified version of how I feel about the PL apart from the Albion..

I'm just doing what I normally do – work, school runs, dog walks – just not watching international football on the TV (same with every tournament that comes around).

I'm not sure if it clashed with any of the games, but I watched Beverley Hills Cop for the eleventy-fifth time last night – cracking film.

Absolutely, i have found it extremely frustrating that something that i used to get a lot of pleasure from has sunk to this level. For me personally i would have loved to see Albion players performing at any major tournament, but not this sham. Also totally agree with your sentiments about those who are watching, in fact that seems a common theme amongst the non-watchers but not maybe the reverse?
I see the Albion ladies are playing this weekend at Dartford, i might give that a go for my football fix.

The PL of course is rich clubs hoarding money and players and trophies and resulting in a totally uneven playing field. The World Cup by contrast is just the best players from each country, you can't buy players from other countries (well, unless you're Qatar lol) - its a much purer form of the game which is part of the reason I get absorbed in it.

Yep. Me again. But I have a genuine question that can be answered by any or all boycotters:

What do you hope to achieve by not watching this tournament?

I’ve not watched a full game as yet it’s not about achieving anything it’s about having morales that you believe in. Personally think all the captains are pathetic all the talk before hand and then bottled the protest at the first sign of getting carded. So what Players have picked up yellow cards in the tournament within five minutes and haven’t been sent off. It’s a weak excuse and obviously was just a load of lip service.

You have young children what if one or more are gay later in their life would you want them persecuted for their sexuality?

Contributing to low viewing figures which sends a message to the bellends that gave them the nod that we want proper places hosting the greatest football tournament on earth. What next, the f***ing antarctic?
