Who's Harry Bloom?

Thanks-just found it.

"The Bloom family has had Brighton in its blood for many years and the new chairman marks a third generation to have a member on the board. Tony Bloom's uncle, Ray, is a club director and Harry, his grandfather, was vice-chairman when the club reached the old first division in 1979. "

Harry was, according to Alan Mullery, the great arbiter between him and Mike Bamber, keeping things professional and right.

When Harry died - on the team bus - the relationship between manager and chairman soured quickly, and Mullery soon resigned in disgust over what he felt were issues the chairman should have left alone.

It makes you wonder how much bigger we could have become if Harry Bloom has lived a while longer.

A tiny man (4ft nothing) who brought Bamber & Wickenden down to earth.

He was quite old when he died...but yes he was the reason Mullery and Bamber could no longer work in sweet harmony.

I 5think he died on a train going to a match.

I thought that it was on the team coach coming home. When Keith Wickenden died when his plane crashed it was left to Harry Bloom to control Bamber and stop him going overboard with his ambitions for the club.

If Tony does as much for the club as Harry did, apart from his investment, we will be have a very good future.

....
Partly true. Yes he died on the coach taking the players from the ground (Stoke) back to their hotel, but it was Wickenden who took over from Bloom as vice-chairman, i.e Bloom died first. According to Mullery Bloom was able to control Bamber in a way that Wickenden couldn't as Bloom was always around. He (Wickenden) was a superb businessman who did a lot for the club finances, but he was very busy and Mullery never really saw him apart from matchdays. When Bloom was vice-chairman he was at the Goldstone every day and was able to act as a buffer whenever Bamber 'interferred too much' (Mullery's words) with Mullery's side of things.

Bamber, Bloom and Wickenden. Three very different men but between them they didn't half make a difference. When Bloom and then Wickenden died the wheels really started to come off.

Harry Bloom was a millionaire car dealer and yes, he was a very small man and yes, he was the calming influence between Bamber and Mullery.
I remember sitting in Sgt. Yorkes casino in the 70's, playing roulette and Harry Bloom was sitting next to me. As I shovelled more and more £5 chips into the casino's profits, I noticed that Harry was betting with the occasiional £1 chip. I realised then, that here was a prudent man who would try and keep BHA on an even keel.
( I also realised why he was a millionaire and I wasn't ! )
