I have only been twice, when I was 15 and 18, I’m not really a fan of being in big crowds in the little streets of Lewes.
I much prefer smaller local bonfire displays, unfortunately I missed the Newhaven one on Saturday as I was away and the South Heighton display is this Saturday when i will be watching the Albion.

I think I'm a little on the 'mature' side for it now, but went regularly from mid 70s and throughout the 80's and loved it.

From what I heard it did start getting a little silly with 10s of thousands piling into the town, but closing the roads early and the station seems to have got it back to something reasonable. My kids have both been in the last few years and it just takes a bit of organising. They went to the pubs in Lewes during the weeks before and got tickets for the Bonfires, and then cycled from Brighton or dumped a car there mid afternoon and got a cab in as far as the roadblocks.

It takes a bit of organising and effort, but for anyone in their late teens or twenties who lives in Brighton, it's definitely worth the effort.

Lewes. It's what happens if you let a town full of pyromaniacs inbreed

A local event for local people.
Why ? Given the Bonfire Societies get a good chunk of income from donations and paid entrance to their displays on the night it seems rather strange to limit it to "locals" and thus limit their income. Anyway, we are all locals - must be otherwise LDC wouldn't have had a say in the stadium. The authorities trying to stop people travelling there is all about them not being bothered to have enough staff on duty - nothing to do with safety.

That said, haven't been since my mid twenty's and have no plan to go this year or any other year moving forwards.

Lindfield is good and a little less 'hectic' than Lewes

I just meant that’s a prevailing attitude in Lewes. See also the Lewes Pound. Many don’t want the plebs there.

I think they're talking b**locks. so people don't go. The whole thing is really spread out, all the bonfires are in different places as well, if they thought there was a real danger they would cancel it. Top of my effigy list would be Putin, closely followed by Trump.
I think they're doing "Ticketmaster", following the Oasis debacle.

I don’t understand why any grown up would want to go. Are they so entranced by things that go “bang”? I can understand kids wanting to go, being out at night, lots of people around, hang out with school mates and girls… but grown men acting the bollocks just because they can?

It’s like a really shit version of The Purge.

I think it’s completely pointless and the mess, damage and strain on police far outweighs people’s rights to throw firecrackers into peoples gardens, at each other, or at cars.

I’d ban it altogether.

Similarly, I can never understand the FASANDS who flock to central London on NYE for the fireworks. Can you just imagine the carnage of trying to get home at 1am after that ? Or fighting your way back to a totally overpriced hotel or air B&B ? Madness.

Every year when I watch it on TV from the comfort of my sofa, I am eternally grateful at the end of it all to just quaff another cherry brandy, shovel some more Cheeselets into my gob, and fall asleep in front of Love Actually.

Who’s Going to Lewes Bonfire Celebrations Tomorrow?

Very few of us, probably. Station closed with no trains stopping there (has been in previous years, so don't expect any different this year) and police road blocks all round the town!
Was taken there in the 50s, when they still rolled the burning barrels down the street, and again in the late 80s, when my eldest was still little. Would love to go again, but couldn't manage the standing for hours and the jostling and shoving (which was getting a bit edgy even in the 80s - probably worse now) - that's if I managed to get through the cordon into the town in the first place!
Don't understand all that's behind it, but what a wonderful, evocative spectacle it is.

I had family connections with Commercial Square, and have been to Lewes in the last 20 years.
i can see the Borough display from my front bedroom window, so will content myself with that.

If you leave the Man City game on 75 mins when we’re 3-0 down, you can make the South Heighton bonfire this Saturday.

I can only hear the loud fireworks from my house, i suppose if i walked up the hill to the edge of the field I could see the displays in the distance
