Given the two preceding managers were both English, I was under the impression that his main qualification was that he happened to be walking past the room while they were trying to think of anybody still both available and willing to do the job.

Maybe he had his own pencil case as well.

You're probably right. The one thing he definitely can't have been picked for was a glittering managerial career at Middlesbrough.

With the big 6 I'd imagine a lot of the managing is telling someone earning a few £million more than you what to do.
This summer, Southgate, but give GP time and he'll be there.

Potter is a better manager than Southgate and as I've said before,potter will be England manager one day and be more successful than Southgate.
But before England I see potter at man city in a few seasons but I was concerned about someone like spurs coming in for him before then.
I'm hoping we have him for a couple more seasons minimum, but we will only keep him if he gets the support from the club to recruit the quality in the team.
If potter feels he has improved the team as far as he can and is not allowed to bring in the quality he wants then spurs will look like a very good career move.
I'm quite sure spurs would rather have potter than Southgate but if Southgate did go there then the question would be is it too soon for potter to take th England job?

The more I think about it i have a feeling Potter would make a very good England manager. I know everyone on here is jumping the gun whether Potter is good enough for England or Spurs but wouldn't it be fun trying to second guess the England line up with GP in charge?

Yes I always get this reaction when I say this to people,but I do believe it.
Its not easy to get my point across in this format but I will try to explain my thinking.
Potters philosophy is the same as guardiolas and what pep has created at man city is the same as potter is doing with us albeit on a much smaller budget,but the fact potter is making progress on a smaller budget says to me that he would be very capable of going to city to carry on what pep has set up there.
In fact pep and potters philosophy are so simalar the transition from pep to potter would be seamless in my opinion.
That same philosophy that city have is also the same that England have been hoping to achieve which was set up with the help of ashworth when he was at the FA.
Southgate in my opinion is a manager that can do that if he is asked but it is not the same as potter and pep who are specialists in this ideology.
Ashworth now working so closely with potter will make potter an even easier fit for a transition to the England job when it becomes available but I admit I see this ideally happening in a few years further down the line.
Potters next couple of seasons will be vital to this career path hopefully he will stay with us,keep us up and push us into the top 10 but if he feels that as a manager he won't get the support in regards to quality coming in or he feels he can't raise the quality further in the players we already have then why would he stay if someone like spurs came knocking?
Personally Im hoping potter will get the support of the club and he will stay with us for a bit longer which would be fantastic.
If Southgate went to spurs then potter would certainly be linked to the England job,but would it be too soon for him?
Whatever happens I definitely think potter is in a mix of managers that will be linked to England,Brighton and club's like man city or spurs.
Potter,Southgate,lampard and Neville are now all managers with a simalar style and group of contacts.

Not that impressed with the managers you are comparing Potter to though. GP is the pick of them by a margin, imo

After he Capello failure and the Allardyce debacle I just think they wanted something very simple and familiar. Someone without real identity/bagage.

Simple, familiar and uncontroversial are all genuine advantages in international management. Without the time to do anything much more complicated your main job is to pick the right team/squad and keep them happy until the end of the tournament.

Maybe Potter would be good at that, but I think it would be a waste of his major good points. Notwithstanding all the moaning about England's selections I think Southgate does fine with England, but it has bugger all to do with how good he is at club management.
