Having one of those days at work, and the prospect jacking in the job and blowing my savings travelling around Australia and NZ for a year is looking increasingly appealing. A "career break" is due I feel, none of this 18 year old student gap year rubbish.

Missing the Albion aside, anyone want to join me? Obviously the famous blue and white stripes will have to be packed, just for the gratuitous shots of me wearing it next to assorted famous sights.

How about a Grand Albion Fans Tour of Down Under? You have to admit it sounds appealing on a grim Thursday afternoon? Plus a chance to update all the Melbourne and Sydney based hordes over a cold beer or ten....

Do it... one of the best things I ever did. Made even better by the fact I was able to blag 4 months unpaid leave, so I could come back to my job afterwards.

Been thinking about it for ages. I reckon I have to do it while I can still get the working visa, ie not too old. Sadly my funds don't quite stretch to a year without working. But I figure working in a bar or whatever in Sydney has got to beat working in an office in Crawley.

Anyone else done this? I could use a little advice from anyone who's been there/done that.

Is it easy to travel alone???

I was in Australia and NZ during their winter 2 years back (which still means 30 degrees in Queensland!!!). Work seemed in good supply down east coast of Oz and if you stayed in hostels you'd soon get to meet loads of people. Those who stayed to work often seemed to form good links, which bode well for meeting up again in different places.

Many of the hostels advertise jobs and seemed to offer assistance in finding work. Many hostels in Oz and NZ were actually very reasonable places, with good locations at silly low prices (less than £10 a night to stay in central Sydney for example)

Travelling can be made quite cheap, either by buying a van (etc) and selling on at final destination (quite common) or getting unlimited travel passes with coach companies for differing time periods.

Even excursions (i.e boattrip around Whitsundays islands) or one-off activites such as swimming with dolphins, bungee (both just over £20!!) etc were ridiculously cheap for what you got.

GO GO GO - you'll never regret it, and like me will probably just want to do it again... and again!

I'm going to japan. O.k its not australia, but its closer to aus than britain and i just want to sound kind of cool......

With regards australia, i reckon you should go to coincide with the rugby world cup. There'll be little better than being in australia when we knock them out of the cup in their own backyard. Thats the sort of stuff dreams are made of.

Thats what i wanted to do but i was turned down(by the jet programme). Twice. Cant blame them really, i wouldn't ever employ me as a teacher. Still, thats why I'm going to go there on a working holiday visa(hopefully) and spend a year wandering around and pointing at the funny temples and locals and 'teach' part time on the side. I'm even taking an internet teaching course!
