Oh yes, the early 80,s driving my Sky Blue with White lines Ford Capri along the seafront. 19 by Paul Hardcastle blasting out of the windows, sunroof up. Scouting for hotties. Get the casual suit on, white socks of course and on the Town and then into the Pink Coconut. Slow dance , erection session at 1.30 am, bit of tonsil tennis, get the phone number and go home.

Happy days, the days of Thatcher and greed is good.

Anyway I digress. Who owned a Capri, the most meligned and underated car of ALL TIME. It was very stylish, a superb and reliable runner and just damn cool. The UK version of the Gran Torino for me.

Not me but my mate Bob at uni had one. He was a massive fan of the car and had a quality 80s stylised poster of a Capri on his Halls of Resi wall. He Tippexed out the number plate and put BOB 1 in it's place. Always made me chuckle as we knocked back the Snakebite.

My mate bought one a couple of years ago (a lovely brown effort) it was great fun to start with. The engine then exploded when he was driving home on Christmas Eve, it ended up costing him thousands!

My brother had two but I was never a fan. The performance on anything less that the 3 litre or 2.8 wasn't great and they were not that good for handling. Not that easy to park either.

It wasn't a bad car, for me. Though I wouldn't want to go back to one.
Luxuries have spoiled me since, as my next car was a Cadillac. Over ten years older, but had electric everything. Several feet longer, and uber-cool.

My dad bought an old Capri in the 80's and I always remember the number plate PUF 32H!

My other half's aunt bought one brand new in the 70s and only recently sold it. She was in the owners club and everything and they only sell their Capri's to fellow members apparently.

A mate of mine had one of the last ones made (anyone enlighten me as to what reg letter that was) from new, bright red and looked good. Trouble is he is a lorry driver and drove it like one - sedately and also changing down at the merest hint of a hill!

Think they were last manufactured in 86 D plate, but some hung around in showrooms and were registered as E plates but not many.

My Dad was fortunate enough to chose one as his company car continually from about 73 to 86. I even took (and failed) a driving test in one. Great fun trying to drive it around during the winters of 84/85/86 when we had PROPER snow, not the light dusting we had a couple of weeks ago. It seemed to go everywhere sideways.

I agree with the poster above - they weren't great cars to drive but they had a certain endearing quality that made me like them. My dad only ever had the gutless 1.6L but a friend of his had a 2.8 injection with a turbo fitted. It had so much acceleration that with your foot hard down it would only go in a straight line - the front would become so light that it didn;t seem to matter which way the wheels were pointing. In the end he wrote it off in a massive accident on the A1 which he was very lucky to walk away from.

Y reg - blue with black roof. Speedo didn't work, brakes were dodgy, steering wobbly, bodywork disasterous, burnt more oil than Saudi Arabia could produce. No chance of it passing MOT. Marvellous car. It would burn anything at traffic lights and then get caught 200 yards down the road when changing up to 3rd gear had no effect whatsoever. Bought it for £80 and got £100 in part exchange deal when it finally died.

ME! had a gold 3 ltr V6 a long time ago, engine was great the rest was awful.

Wife killed it by hitting a bus stop.

I had a bog-standard 1.6L but added front and rear spoilers, spot lamps and a long whip arial. It did over 40 to the gallon and got me to and from Germany without any problems. Happy days!

I had a Mk 2. It was brown and my first car. I too thought I was cool, speeding along Brighton seafront, with crass 80s music blearing out.

I had either the most awful bad luck or good luck depending on your point of view. It got knicked outside Shoreham police station and was found in Kennington London, burnt out!!

Its handling was awful. It was better going backwards than forwards. The bulge on the massive bonnet was just a joke.

I've still got one, but haven't driven it for a couple of years. Probably the most fun car I've ever driven because it has it's own endearing qualities.
