As for players, I tried asking various AI services but they gave no sensible answers. Manually digging I've found goalie Eric Gill, born in 1930, who at 95 should be up there among the oldest still around.

Just read some articles about the gentleman and he seems a top bloke.

His fame makes me a little suspicious though, maybe his whereabouts have just been traced more and a more anonymous older player could be hiding somewhere? Or did the Spencer lad look it up thoroughly?

The person who knows most about Albion's history is Tim Carder, official club historian, the person behind the Brighton and Hove Albion Heritage Society, the museum (housed at the Amex but created by the Society) and the author of the definitive club history and the Seagulls' Who's Who. I would guess that for Spencer to make that claim it has probably come from Tim (but I don't know that for sure).

In the past he has made an occasional post on here as @The History Man but I'm not aware that he is a regular visitor (his last post was May 2023).

Incidentally, he also wrote "The Encyclopaedia of Brighton" (as in the city, not the football club).

Yeah I've read big chunks (and skipping big chunks) of that one as well after downloading it thinking it was about the club... good read. Like how it is structured and got plenty of inspiration given I want to write something similar about my city.
