Who is the King (or Queen) of pop now?

Not sure about current artists but I would like to open up this debate amongst the learned musos of this fine board:-

Male or female, groups included.

My nominations:

  1. Benny and Bjorn of ABBA.
  2. Paul Weller/The Jam.
  3. Madonna.
  4. Madness.
  5. Berry Gordy and/or Smokey Robinson for Motown - any finer catolgue of pop tunes?

We will try and keep the personal proclivities of the artists concerned out of the equation shall we?

Madonna makes the worst music of that lot so it must be her.

Being king/queen of pop means there's alot of glitter about you but not much substance.

Britney Spears... :dunce:

In all seriousness, surely at this time, the Princes of Britpop must be Take That? Following their recent tour they seem to be bigger than they were the first time - and they are relesing dome pretty good music too.

Wise words - perhaps the acid test should be "would their tunes still be played on the radio in 40 yrs time, can you whistle them and are their tunes 3 minutes or thereabouts". Good call for Take That, esp. Gary Barlow who I believe writes a lot of stuff of other people.

Does anyone know if Madge was based in Paris or London around 1980? If so I may have met her on a boat train from Paris to London once. I certainly met a very loud New York girl of about 25 who could sing well, and she was very street-wise.

She told me I would make a good roadie, sadly I never took up her suggestion...:stupid:

Couldn't have been her - you ruled her out when you said "could sing well"
