Abort, retry, fail
A basic form of cricket can be traced back to the 13th century, but it may have existed even earlier than that. The game seems to have originated among children of the farming and metalworking communities in the Weald between Kent and Sussex. Written evidence exists of a game known as creag being played by Prince Edward, the son of Edward I (Longshanks), at Newenden, Kent in 1300.

Whether Wikipedia is reliable source is a different kettle of fish.

There's something in that. My sister works for the national trust and is based at Sheffield Park and is often telling me about a planned england v australia commemerative match that they're trying to get organised. I'm just unsure what it commemerates. First england/aus match maybe ?
Obviously if it ever happens I will spill the beans on here so we can all go..

I think I heard from my Mum actually, and she used to live in Sheffield Park (where my Nan still lives). I never believed her though because it's just a hamlet in the middle of nowhere really!

Just found this

A court case in the year 1598 also referred to a sport named Kreckett, which was being played at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford around 1550. The Oxford dictionary also cites this instance as the very first instance of cricket in the history of the English language.

i read recently (and in a book too, not t'internet) that a form of cricket was commonly played by people in Sussex, particularly in the ashdown forest area using a wooden ball and a tree stump for the wicket.

OK Big Fella i believe you:lolol:...............what about Squash.......where does that originate from!! and Table tennis?

Squash orginated from a mental institution in West Sussex where two men were locked up in a cell with just a satsuma - they rubbed their raw bloodied hands across the walls and floor to draw a court and beat the satsuma around for what seems like 25 years on a Monday night.
No one was aloud to enter that cell and play unless the other had died of a rare disease called sadoldmenitus.

Fact.
