Both have a rich history of musical brilliance but who in NSC opinions is better?

LIVERPOOL

Cavern Club, Merseybeat, The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy Fury, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Coral, The La's, The Zutons

MANCHESTER

Hacienda, Factory Records, The Hollies, The Bee Gees, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Oasis, The Verve, Take That, Badly Drawn Boy

The Verve are actually from Wigan. However you could replace them with the Ting Tings. I would still say Liverpool if only for the Beatles who have outlasted all the other bands mention and will continue to do so.

This is obviously not a difinitive, or apparently accurate, list or bands it is just a list of things that sprung to mind so that you could briefly mull the question over before making an informed decision.

You could briefly mull over the question to provide a more informed proposition while you're at it.

Both have their merits, but if you reduce it to a simple question of who has contributed the most to World culture then the answer has to be Liverpool.

Liverpool also had Julian Cope, Pete Burns, Pete Wylie, Gomez, The Farm, the nightclub Erics

Manchester had A Certain Ratio, Genesis P Orridge, M People, John Cooper Clarke, 808 State, Ruthless Rap Assassins

I'm going for Manchester. In my honest opinion the Hollies were as good as the Beatles melodically and the 80s and 90s belonged to Madchester.

Joy Division are only from GREATER Manchester, i.e. Salford. Ian Curtis may have been born in Manchester but he grew up in Macclesfield.

The Verve are from Wigan.

Inspiral Carpets from Oldham.

Morrisey is from Davyhulme.

Ian Brown is from Warrington and John Squire from Broadheath.

The Happy Mondays from Little Hulton, Salford.

As for The Hollies included in the original line-up were Alan Clarke was from Salford, Graham Nash from Blackpool and Eric Haydock from Burnley.

Manchester is similar to Brighton in that any band from the nearby area tends to end up in Manchester simply because it is the centre of that region's music and cultural scene.

Would still say Manchester though because it is more my sort of music and, as I think someone above says, they produced more truly iconic bands.
