Does the BBC SPOTY have to be somebody currently engaged in Sprt as a player?

If not, I'd seriously suggest Gary Speed be nominated. He'd walk it. Would be a fitting tribute.

Oh do BEHAVE Tom. Its not an award for the biggest sporting tragedy. That kind of mawdling sentimentality would be something I'd expect Stateside, but lets keep this award to sporting achievements, not posthumous tributes.

Well done Cav

Pretty crap show though. Not much real sport...as BBC have hardly got any left.

Why did BBC feel the need for fireworks ? It's not the f***ing X Factor!

I think they have to fulfil a pyrotechnics quota for the year

Get in there Cav !

Thoroughly deserved winner for his amazing sporting achievements AND he does have a personality too. A competitive arrogance that's needed for success but such a down to earth genuine bloke and you never know what he's going to say in interviews/award speeches. I liked the speech tonight - acknowledging the absolutely crucial contribution of his team mates, and nicest of all in this Olympic year - boosting up the other nominees and British sporting achievement and encouraging everyone on to further success.

Nice one Cav ! :clap2:

Beats me how somebody riding a bike can possibly be the Sports Personality of the year.

He is so famous I had to ask what he did and what had he achieved, cos I am not into bike riding, I did that when I had to in order to get to school.

The program has been getting more and more crap as the years have gone by, and especially since it was renamed from 'Sports Review of the Year'. Best way to watch it now is in about 20 minutes via sky+. Glad to see Cav won it though.

Not Luton! Thank God
First year in memory that I've not watched it. Wasn't interested, has little to do with sport - a vote for housewives that don't know one sport from another.

If Clarke had won I would have been inclined to agree with you, but Cavendish,s achievement was the greatest this year by far and he got nearly half the vote. Seems like the public can be trusted.

No disrespect, but that says more about your understanding of the sport. What Mark Cavendish achieved last year was outstanding.

He is worshiped the way football players are in Europe, so it is nice that he has been recognised for his achievements in his own country.
