I couldn't give a rats, but I guess Andy Murray must be in with a shout

For winning...nothing of any significance? As opposed to Strauss (winner), Cook (winner), Farah (winner), McIlroy (winner), Clarke (winner), Cavendish (winner) etc etc?

Last time I looked, Mark Cavendish was heavy odds on to win it with the bookies.

Would like to see Darren Clarke lift the trophy for winning The Open and what he's been through in the last few years after losing his wife to cancer. Also think Alastair Cook has a chance after we thrashed India 4-0 in the summer to become number one test side.

A shame Dario Franchitti can't even make the top 10. Three titles in a row ffs!

Darren Clarke is a fat Irishman playing on a sob story. No chance. McIlroy is good but the US Open won't appeal to anyone but hardcore golf fans the way winning the Open or the Masters would have done. No chance. Murray is a slamless Scot. No chance. Strauss isn't even the best England cricketer of the year. No chance. If it was up to me I'd give it to Cook, Lewis Hamilton or Mario Balotelli. Unfortunately, weirdos always win this thing so it'll go to someone who rides a bike or runs around a track, despite the fact nobody actually gives a shit about it.

Please explain what I have highlighted above, I don't understand what you mean.

Darren Clarke won the most prestigious golf tournament in the world.

From being a has been to champion, it would be like Bas Savage joining Man City and scoring the winning goal in the Champions League.

Cavendish won his section of The Tour de France, and became only the 2nd ever Brit to win The World Championship, this double has only been done once before. (The previous W/C winner Tommy Simpson also won SPoTY, that year)

Cav for me, for a Brit to be the dominant sprinter in the Tour De France is simply incredible. The peloton know if he hasn't been ditched coming into the sprint finish it is GAME OVER. He is an incredible athlete who also happens to be a gobby shite as well, so he scores on the personality front too. The cricketers can get their plaudits with team of the year.

It has to be Mark Cavendish

Prior to the 2011 season he has won 79 individual races, now 2011 has been his most successful year, winning the green jersey after 5 stage wins of the Tour de France. The most stage wins in the Tour De France was held by Barry Hoburn who has 8 over a number of years. Cav has won 20 in the past 4 years.
Only one other British male has been the World Road Race Champion.

His achievement is massive and deserves to be recognised.

When people like Lewis Hamilton & Nigel Mansell have won in the past the public have gone wild and they have won the title. Yet the races are often won by who is driving the best car at that time.

In the last 3 years, Cav has had to ride 3 different makes of bike due to the sponsors etc and there are more than one team riding the same bikes but he keeps winning.

It’s just a shame that more people don’t watch the sport, as his achievements this year would be the equivalent of Andy Murray winning Wimbledon and the French open in the same year or one of the golfers winning the open and the USA open and they would walk the Sports Personality of the Year award by a mile.

 The Tour de France attracts more spectators than other sporting event in the world - it's a massive sporting spectacle.

(and Lewis Hamilton has never won SPOTY)

Did he win a couple of second tier running races, and will be found out when competing with 'the big boys'.

For someone who likes to go to lengths to educate the ignorant on the achievements of the cyclists, that's a pretty stunning post.

How exactly is the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS '2nd tier'? In just over 12 months Farah won the 5k and 10k double at the Europeans, then very narrowly missed repeating that at the World's (gold and silver).
