Looking at teaching jobs in the Brighton area, I see that there are some vacancies in Whitehawk...

If I were to get a job at a school there, what could I expect on a daily basis?

Since Stanley Deason (or whatever it was called) closed there are now only primary schools in the area, most of the teenagers end up going to Falmer or Longhill.

I've grown up in Whitehawk, and I'm still here now. I went to what used to be known as Stanley Deason, and it was a bit of shit school hence the closure of it a few years after I left

I take it your applying for a job at Whitehawk Junior school? If so I can't really help you, because I went to a different one.

Ok I will be more blunt then...

The chances are if you go to work at school in Whitehawk you will work with some pretty troubled kids, because it's a tough estate. But not all the kids will be like that.

Since Stanley Deason (COMART was its last name I think) closed, the council changed its policy on catchment areas for schools changed, and a lot of kids who would have gone there are instead going to Varndean, much to the chagrin of posh parents who moved to the Balfour Road area in order to get their kids there.

You get pain in the arse kids everywhere. I would judge it not on the area, but on the ethos of the school. Are they strong on discipline? Supportive to teachers? Do they have measures in place if things get out of hand? Do they have a good relationship with parents? Etc etc

yes, and i dont f***ing blame them either, why not attempt to make the likes of falmer ,fawcett etc as good as the likes of varndean ? you can bet your f***ing life that varndean/stringer will be dragged down more to falmers level than these kids miraculously turning into model pupils.And why do you have to classify anyone who might want to give their child a leg up by moving to an area with good schools as "posh" ? seems to me you're fighting class wars that were out of date 50 years ago.

I'm not fighting this war, it's the parents who are.

Even now, Varndean still has the reputation (mis-placed), 40-odd years on from finishing being a grammar school, as 'the' place to send your kids because they will have a better chance in life on the back of going there.

thats the idea, to raise the bar. alot of how a school is run is from the parents and their involvement, in particular as governors. by having kids of "posh" parent's, who tend to be more involved and active, at the poorer schools they hope to spread that improvement about. lets face it, the comprehensive system failed a generation and many dont like the old grammer system despite the advantages. B&H are trying a new way and i hope they succeed.

i dont think you understand the meaning of 'posh'. how is sending your kids to an ok state school a posh thing to do? it's not even a particularly good school is it? at uni I meet people from Eton, Harrow and other ridiculous places that charge £30 a year in fees. now thats f***ing posh

I work in another part of Brighton in a primary school. You would get a lot of challenging kids but there is plenty of support and targetted money to help. A lot of the kids have learning mentors to help on a one to one basis and this works really well. Don't know if you have them in Canada but we have league tables based on value added and Whitehawk actually comes out really high. They also have a new head on the way from the other side of Brighton who did well at their present school! Best of all you may even get a visit from Gully which is highly amusing...'We want Gully' 'We want Gully@
