Whitehawk are determined to press ahead with attempts to change the club’s name to Brighton City.

And chairman John Summers hopes the exposure from their excellent FA Cup run will help gain support for their plans.

Club officials believe the name Whitehawk is holding them back, partly due to a common albeit maybe unfair conception about the east Brighton estate which they represent and more significantly because few people outside the area know where the place is.

Can't see the Albion agreeing to any of this, its like opening a supermarket and calling it Tesco Super Foods.

Having read the article it appears the Albion have successfully lobbied the FA. What grounds have they used though? No one owns the name Brighton and other cities have teams with the same city eg Manchester.

That's what I was thinking. Whitehawk should be allowed to use 'Brighton' in their name just as much as we can.

It's simple. There is now a rule stating that no team can enter a FA sanctioned league with the same town name as an existing club. So that's the end of that. Whitehawk is a little club with big ambitions, but Albion have spent millions on branding and Uncle Tony won't let the Hawks benefit by hanging on our shirt tails. So you might say, 'End of!'.

Really? So any existing clubs who are long established would have to change their names if they happened to have the same place name as a club in the league? Hardly seems fair. Scanning the non league table there are at least a couple in the northern league, Bradford Park Avenue and FC United of Manchester for example. Is they were promoted, I can't believe they would have to change their names.

Or, indeed, New Brighton.

Is that actually a rule though? In the FA rules, it just mentions that a club cannot change it's name without permission from the committee, it doesn't mention the guidelines for that committee. Would seem quite draconian or even implausible that you cannot refer to the town you're based in. In fact, aren't they asking to name themselves after the town of Brighton rather than city of Brighton & Hove?

What a stupid law. So no one can form a football team with Brighton in the title ever again? Doesn't make any sense. I find this hard to believe.
