I didn't mean it literally. I meant that the national anthemn was applicable to the rest of the country.

You can tell the season is finished.

Everything I have typed in the last few days has been contradicted by somebody.

No it hasn't

Jambo you really are aren't you, you are one of the worst types of tossers that are around I can here your nasally twine now, "GSTQ really has no place in a modern progresive society" yeah man right on!

What a comlpete ring piece you sound, as for your point about a third of the country obviousely not just the left wing fringe but many left wingers to, however you were saying that there are republican right wingers that was your first point, despite me not understanding your in depth analysis obviously because I am a dunce you have not really explained yourself.

Mate go and ask your average right winger or maybe even just right of centre what they think about the Royal Family you may be disamally suprised, in that little world of right on politics that is moving this modern progressive world forward people may not like the history and pagentry of the Royals well it is 'so un-cool man it like a reminder of all the bad things we like did in the past man'. :salute: :salute:

I take it the second paragraph is directed at fatbadger and not me. As for your other points I am not sure what point you are making. The point I was making is that GSTQ is completely inappropriate as a national anthem in this day and age. That's my view. I respect other people's views. Rambo said we should see it as a means of homage to our nation (be that England, Scotland or the UK) . I agree but fail to see why we should be paying homage to the Queen. I understand that the Queen is the constitutional figurehead of the nation but I don't have to agree with it. In any event, what makes a constitutional figurehead inherently "happy and glorious"?

Quite apart from the fact that GSTQ has a second verse which is anti-Scottish, I also resent the fact that England's national teams in various sports sing this national anthem as if England is Britain, which it clearly isn't. England needs to find it's own national anthem and then GTSQ can just be used at the Olympics and or at some other state occasion such as a Royal wedding etc

Too thick to understand the debate; and so completely unaware of what's going around him, he can't even remember who he is replying to. :lolol:

In the past, SM, I have happily put you forward as proof that there are some intelligent right-wingers on this board capable of putting forward a good argument (in contrast to, say, looney). I now take back all of that.

Not only an accident of birth .... but also by the fact that their own ancestors, raped, pillaged, murdered and suppressed whole communities and regions to gain their position in our country and then passed the privilege down through generations to the chinless wonders we as a nation now support and are supposed to tug our forlocks to!

The royal family is the bastion of a class system which dictates that by accident of birth they are to gain every advantage available and be held in some spurious esteem, by all those not so fortunate.

But times are changing. Hats off to Blair for his start at the reform of the House of Lords and the planned changes to the ludicrous honours system. The excesses of Margaret, Charles, Andrew and Co have opened up debate, which will I feel, lead to the demise of the royal family and hopefully a classless society.

BTW: as for a National Anthem, we could do worse than Jerusalem – written by William Blake (probably the first socialist!)

Sorry Jambo that second paragraph was obviously meant to be pre fixed with pratbadger, sorry if I can't understand your high brow ramblings badger , but anyway an endorsment from you is about as welcome as you a severe dose of Syphilis and Ghonerrea so glad you have withdrawn your assesment of me as an intelligent right winger.

Jambo you have your view thats your right of course as it is the right of everyone in this country and the majority view the Royal Family as a good thing.

Simster if 17 million don't like it which I reckon is a little high it leaves 40 million that do. I think there is a lot more apathy about the subject than the views you get on here but when it comes down to it most will stick with the institution.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

The majority view the Royal Family as a good thing? Can you back that up? I doubt very much there's any truth in that as I don't remember there ever being a true opinion poll on the subject, probably because the subjects don't want to know the truth.

There are no doubt people like yourself that are very much pro monarchy as well as many that are against them, but I would guess that there are many more that couldn't give a f*** either way.

Well Simster it DID degenerate into a Monarchy v Republican slanging match!

I have to agree with SM on one thing though - I've never met a right-wing British Republican. The nearest is someone like my Dad who is very right-wing but is definitely no Monarchist. However he isn't in favor of a Republic because he thinks the system works fine as it is at the moment. He also thinks we'd never get it right: "It's taken us a thousand years to get this far, do you really think a Republic would be any better? We'd only screw it up".

Brovian I think that is what Simster really wanted it is the close season after all, what next?

How about Iraq, Ulster, or Global Capitalism, always good subjects for those summer months, maybe the Gay pride parade don't get me started on that, who knows it all good hank though innit!

I stood up and sang GSOPR at the play off final and found it indeed to be very moving.

God save our Pauly Reid
Long live our Pauly Reid
God save Paul Reid

Sent from Australia
To play for Brighton
Long may he play for us
God save Paul Reid.

It is however soundly beaten by GOSBTS

Too far from the sun
GOSBTS is more rousing than the somewhat depressing GSTQ. Also, I see myself as English (NOT British) and would rather see an inspirational English national anthem - in line with one or two others I think Jerusalem would be OK but can't help feeling that something better is needed. GSTQ doesn't get the goosebumps going for me but the Welsh anthem 'Land of My Fathers' does - but only because it sounds good. And no, I'm not Welsh.

Sussex by the Sea every time, because it comes with a feeling of pride, unlike the "Royalty are better than you scum" dirge that is the current National Anthem. If it were Land of Hope and Glory, that's a whole different kettle of fish, as that's about the people and the country, all of us, not just those few who don't have to lower themselves to our level
