This could be a can of worms and doesn't have to degenerate into a republican-monarchist debate, so lets just see what happens?

Which of these "anthems" mean more to you as a Sussexman?

GOSBTS - no contest.. I hate the national anthem.. it sounds like a load of old dirge.. Even Germany's anthem sounds better than ours IMHO

Leaving aside politics this is still an absolute no-brainer. Those first few rousing bars of GOSBTS always make the hairs on my neck stand up. The whole tune is uplifting and really raises the spirits. The British National Anthem in comparison is a boring dirge. Actually it's a boring dirge when compared to anything, except perhaps the dripping of a tap.

Bit of a no-brainer poll this one. GOSBTS every time. Don't get me wrong, I like the National Anthem (although I think Land of Hope and Glory should be the anthem for England), but nothing builds the anticipation and invokes so many good (and bad) memories as GOSBTS.

did it require a poll?
Apparently not. I'm waiting for SM's answer. Normally he makes me piss my pants laughing when he talks about how proud he feels when he hears the national dirge but up against GOSBTS it could be a tough call for the fella.

Well someone's voted for the dirge.

But this really is no contest.

Ok Simster get those plastic pants ready, you really need to see a doctor about that not a nice probelm to have.

GSTQ or GOSBTS? well as a Londoner I don't quite have the same attachment to the tune as you born and bred lot and anyway I am British and a Royalist and proud of it so GSTQ is the ultimate one for me.

The way it was sung at the Millenium did make me proud to bursting and did make the hairs on my neck stand up, did that have the required affect Simster, you better go get that cleaned up!

However a rousing rendition of GOSBTS does run it close even for a plastic Sussexman

GOSBTS

I refuse to accept the version of the National Anthem that we sing as well as the Union Jack. I am from Sussex first and foremost, then England and I would like an National anthem to show this.

And why do we sing GSTQ at footie matches?? Why not land of hope and glory? Why do English footie fans sing 'Rule Britannia'? It's a very confused world innit.

GOSBTS, enough though I am NOT a Sussexman.

Essentially because I care about Sussex, whereas I don't care about the Queen (and I don't believe in God). Now, if we got ourselves a good anthem, the words of which

Not quite. You'll need to prattle on a bit more about how the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when the dirge is sung *muffled guffaw* and how you'd be in tears if it was played before a match if you were out there on the pitch *chortle*.

Please carry on. I need an excuse to go home, and would gladly use the "pant change" one as I'm very very bored.

I don't want to be accused of incitment to incontinence but me and Lawrence Dallagio the same I suppose and Stuart Pearce both caught making Simster's weak bladder burst through hilarity.

Oh well both of them are big poofs anyway crying at the National Anthem whats the matter with them anyone would think they were proud of their queen and Country how quaint and old fashioned of them.

You can go home surely now

Can anyone explain why they played it at the Millennium ?

I didn't mind as it happens - I was dying for a piss and took the opportunity to splash the old boots whilst that dirge was playing.
