The guardian on Monday in their season guide was predicting 10th I think...

I'd think it would be more like 6-8th, just out of the playoffs would suit me to a tee....

Reasons not to go up include building stability for the next few seasons, money should be unfortunately used to fund Falmer which would set us up for a long and illustrious future...

Respectfully, Tedbear, if you stand still you go backwards. To have any chance of progressing, attracting good players and holding onto the better ones we have, we need to be in the first division.

That level also further highlights the inadequacies of Withdean, and helps our case by showing a real long term need for Falmer.

My thinking lately HHS that in order to make Div 1 we'd need cash for players? given the amout of cash needed for Falmer - and the fact we just don't seem to have it (ie BZ's money) - why can't we focus on bringing local players up through the ranks, keeping the players we do have to get some stability in the squad and then over a few years work back up to the top of Div 1?

I agree with you though that to keep players we need to be in Div 1 but again they'll demand higher salaries and be in line (if they are worth it) to be picked off by other higher paying Div 1 clubs or even premiership... So its a catch 22 frankly...

Without Falmer the club will struggle for a future - a stable team with capacity gate returns will help the cause...

Indeed, but I've a lot of faith in Coppell's ability to get us up (maybe not this season, but soon) without spending too much dosh. He looks to have chosen expertly so far - how many of his signing have been duffers, and how much cash has he spent?

Looking at the sale of QPR tickets, demand doesn't seem to be as high as last season. I guess we won't really know until we play Luton, which isn't on telly. Even if it's full every game again, it won't bring in enough money to cover wages/operating costs in this division, let alone the first - it'll be a problem regardless. So that's a problem that I personally think we may as well have in Division 1 as Division 2. Income (other than ticket sales) goes up in Div 1 as well as expenditure. I'm just a bit worried that if we don't get back up quickly all the momentum we've built up in the last few seasons will ebb away.

You're right though - Falmer is no.1 priority regardless of promotion this season. We get the nod there, and we've a decent chance of holding on to Coppell and getting new players in even if we finish 14th.

I believe top 5 will be:
Sheff Weds, QPR, Tranmere, Bristol City and us, but so much depends on who stays fit, who leaves or who is signed.

Take QPR. If Langley is fit for the season and not sold they have a great chance of winning the title. But he's injury prone and when fit gets linked with all other London clubs except Chelsea and Arsenal.

Perm those 5 in virtually any order.

Do you believe that SC would have stayed on if he didn't think he
had the squad and budget to get us promoted? He is the master of (dour)understatement which is why he keeps playing our chances down

Champions but at worst playoffs.
