I think we've probably been over this a few times now - refugees receive 30% below the basic benefit level and do not get pushed to the front of any queue, other than the traditional lets find a scapegoat for our real problems one.

Looney - can I put forward a suggestion you might like ? Part of the rise in racism is down to New Labour.

My reason for saying this is that Blair & co's abandonment of traditional working class communities and the willingness of Blunkett, Straw and the rest of their self-serving cabal to adopt the rhetoric of racist rabble ("swamping" "bogus asylum seekers", etc) leaves a slice of those communities open to seduction by the "easy" solutions of the BNP and their ilk.

Incidently the British Empire saved my great-grandparents from being slaughtered by Tsarist thugs, consequently I can assure you I have minimal historical guilt !

What a difference three months can make. As a leftie (by your defintion, though I prefer liberal) I fully agree with a womens right not to be dictated too by religious fanatics.
If you would like to see a reduction in the number of terminations carried out in this country maybe you should encourage better sex education to our school kids rather than harassing vunerable people who are having to make very difficult decisions.

Good post LC (although we're generally accepted as the fourth or fifth richest country in the world - depending what figures you believe).

To answer Fridge Man's point, the BNP and other right wing groups have made very little headway in London because there is much more tolerance of immigrants whoever they might be. The reason that there have been problems in Oldham and Burnley is that the BNP have been stirring up trouble and the Labour party have been ill-prepared to fight them.

The media haven't helped. Too many tabloids have spread lies about immigration and scare stories about 'bogus' asylum seekers, such reporting has distorted the debate. So people like Fridgeman can put forward 'facts' such as one in 10 asylum seekers is bogus (which is not even close to being true).

One furthe point: as several people have pointed out, nearly all of us are from immigrant stock. In my case, my father's ancestors fled persecution by French catholics and came to England to practise their religion in peace. These waves of migrants have brought huge benefits to this country.

Personally speaking, I think anyone who by coming to this country has had to, scrimp and save to afford the passage, be ingenious enough to get across his or her own country's borders, be hardy enough to survive a long and difficult passage and be determined to provide for his or her own family's welfare, is exactly the sort of person who should be welcomed to this country. Look at the economic success of the Ugandan asians and the Vietnamese boatpeople if you want to see how migrants can add to the financial well-being of a country.

Sadly, there will always be people like Looney and Fridgeman who would be happy living in a poor country as long as it's all-white. Happily, the vast majority of us would disagree.
