Aus, NZ and then Dubai from mid-Jan.

Flying with Emirates - anyone got any experience of them?

Just back from Dubai, flew with Emirates. Their plane going out was older, so limited choice on movies, but coming back was a new plane with HUGE choice of stuff - I watched telly for 7 hours!

Service generally OK, nothing special. Queues to check in at Dubai airport were ridiculously long - it took about 50mins.

Thanks for tips, sounds like it should be OK then. Was this Economy (I didn't mention earlier but we decided to go BC due to my health issues)? Thanks again.

Yes, it was economy.

BC looked good, you just don't want to get the back row of BC because then you're only a thin curtain away from the front row of EC, which is always screaming babies.

How the hell can you group camping with staying with friends or family?

Anyway. Going to Edinburgh next for a weekend and am staying with friends, not bloody camping. Not sure about next overseas visit. Either going to Hong Kong or Africa for some Winter sunshine.

Flying to San Franciso, have 3 days in SF, then driving/catch the coastal train down to San Diego via LA. Then going on a 10 day boat trip Whale watching finishing in Mexico, fly back to San Diego, have 2 days in San Diego then fly back to Gatwick.

All booked apart from still to decide if to hire a car and drive from SF to SD via LA or getting the scenic train journey instead.

Flying to the US with Northwest - not been with them before. Got flights for £300 return which didnt seam too bad.

3 weeks away and cant wait!

Flew to Dubai on Emirates. Loved it, very good service and attentive staff. TV and movie choice was good and food was superb. A fine choice.

I've flown to Oz twice with Emirates, and if you count each leg of the flight as one, I've done 8 flights with them. 6 in Economy, 1 in BC, and 1 in First. For the Economy I second what the OP said about the older planes not being so good for movies and stuff. In Business I would recommend sitting in the middle section, front row if you can. That way you can see the big screen at the front where they show the take off/landing from cameras on the front and underneath the plane. That's wicked! Also at the front you get the best space cos nobody reclining in front of you.

Emirates give you these posh little menus whichever class you fly in, but in Business, you get a few meal choices and the meal portions are very good imo. You will get a classy little pouch thing full of toiletries etc including small bottles of Clarins products. When I did BC, there were only 10 of us out of about 50 seats so the service was pretty much 1:1.

But First Class beats it hands down, if not a bit overpretentious with their fancy little sarnies and pastries on proper china crockery lol.

One tip I'd give, is if you haven't already, apply for Skywards rewards cards for everyone flying with you and them make sure they are added to your flight. Flying BC will earn you some serious air miles, and you may even have enough to upgrade a part of your flight to First.

Last flight I did, I flew from Gatwick to Dubai in Economy, First from Dubai to Perth, and then was booked to do Economy all the way home. But with the miles I had earnt from booking that flight, plus an extra £200 to buy the miles I was short, I was able to upgrade to Business for the Perth/Dubai return flight by calling their Oz office while I was there.

Worth the 5 minutes of my time that it took imo

can you actually do that? i'm sure i've tried that with BA and they just ignored the "double counting"

interesting to know if it works on other airlines

I've flown Emirates to Thailand - only cattle class - but what a great airline. Would recommend them anybody, thought they were great, and I hate flying.

As for next holiday, well have just come back from my honeymoon in Kenya. Next holiday isn't until next April... but going to Taba in Egypt for a fortnight

Don't have the time for Holidays until Summer but am going to visit my Brother and brand new Nephew in Dorset in a couple of weeks which I am very much looking forward to. Going to be the Godparent too so will be good even though the locale is not very exotic.

Do you mean the claiming points from the flight I hadn't technically taken? Cos if so, yep def can vouch that it worked for me last Xmas.

Oh Alex Dawson, one more thing about flying BC, you get a free limo transfer to/from the airport too!

I would choose Emirates every time, best airline I've ever flown on imo

that's what i meant yes. like when i book for the family and try to claim the miles on each booking, BA always rejects it. interesting to know that other airlines aren't so mean
