The old joke said ..the North begins in Watford. As a Brightonian I would agree since I always felt on strange ground North of London..
When I lived in South Leicestershire, the city of Leicester always had a Northern feel , with the accents and Northern expressions etc. Visiting down to Northampton always felt more like a Southern town .... so maybe the line is in between...

Although if it’s the north-south debate, the north includes the West Midlands, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire.

There's the south and then the north. The midlands is an area the other two do not wish to be associated with in any manner.
