Being very old and the possessor of a Welsh childhood ...

John Charles.

My grandad said that John Charles was the best player he EVER EVER saw play. Reckoned he was better than Matthews, Charlton, Pele, Best, Puskas.....in fact, anyone he'd ever seen. Can you vouch for this Lord B?

Oh, I wanted to be Liam Brady when I was little. I share his initials, always fancied myself as a winger and am also left-footed. Sadly, I've always been shite at footie.

Peter Osgood - Legend. My first ever football kit when I was 5 was a Chelsea kit with the number 9 on the back!

His move to Juventus gave him the status of a legend that we were only permitted a glimpse of when he put in an appearance for Wales. And that was, of course, a great era in Welsh football - culminating in reaching the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup.

I think the fact that his appearances in Wales were so rare simply enhanced his god-like status. His representative on earth was his brother, Mel, who played for Swansea Town (and, later, Arsenal) and, like John, could play at both centre half and centre forward. Being great in both positions was the ambition of every nipper in those days.

"Il Gigante Bueno". Widely regarded by Italians as the greatest no. 11 ever to play on Italian soil.

John Charles is also one of a very small number of players to have played for Great Britain.

Great Britain line-up against the Rest of Europe (Windsor Park, Belfast, 13 August 1955):-

Jack Kelsey (Wales), Peter Sillett (England), Joe McDonald (Scotland), Danny Blanchflower (Northern Ireland), John Charles (Wales), Bertie Peacock (Northern Ireland), Stanley Matthews (England), Bobby Johnstone (Scotland), Roy Bentley (England), Jimmy McIlroy (Northern Ireland), Billy Liddell (Scotland).

Stevie Heighway. 1971 cup final he scored but still lost. Its the first game I remember properly and I was a winger too. Liverpool were my 2nd team for the next 15 years as a result.

Daglish for me. Why I always wanted/want to be number 7

Was very disappointed when I grew up and realised what a dull fucker he is.

Skills tho

Same for me with Lineker.

Those f***ing crisp adverts..............

Looking back I would have loved to have been Cantona: world class footballer, actor and one time (?) pop star with that bollocks about Leeds and why he loved them. And then he left ha ha ha ha ha ha. And joined their most hated rivals ha ha ha ha ha ha. And won loads of trophies. And Leeds didn't. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha:cool:
