I just don't get mince pies at all. They look, smell and taste like shit but are somehow sold as food.
I can't think of anything else as vile, except maybe Christmas pudding.

I fall into the trap of thinking they should be yummy and then low and behold one ingredient - no idea what it is - has an unfathomably crunchy texture for what is essentially dried/boiled fruit - and it ruins the whole thing.

On paper - pastry, sugar, festive fruits and a smattering of spices - they should be bloody delicious but they’re like someone has tipped the contents of a particularly fruity nappy into average pastry and then heated it up. Just wrong.

This weeks shop included a first box of mince pies, the heartily recommended Tesco crumble topped mince pies, lush.

Seasonal food baffles me a bit. I mean, if there's demand for something – mince pies, stollen, bread sauce, turkey, strawberries and cream, pancakes, whatever – then why not offer it the whole year around? Is it a supply thing, or do people just like to be 'festive'.

Maybe hot cross buns and Kinder Surprise are leading the way and things will change
