When I was a kid in the North Stand we sang that old favourite Sussex By The Sea with equal enthusiasm to how it is sung today
HOWEVER, when we sang it the it went
"...for we're going up AND WE'LL win the cup for Sussex By The Sea...."
Somehow it has changed to
"...for we're going up TO win the cup for Sussex By The Sea...."

The second is more difficult to sing as well.

So who changed the words and shall we go back to the original??

The corner quietly rusting
I sugest circa 1983 would be a good place too satrt.

But I agree the older version makes more sense.

My house
From what I've heard on this topic before it changed during the 1983 cup run for obvious reasons. As I was only 2 at the time I can't be certain, so can anyone confirm this, or have I been making things up again?

Horsham Town
Sounds about right plus "To" is alot easier to sing fast than "and we'll" which is probably why it has stuck.

In my defence, I was left unsupervised.

Ahh!!!! My bete-noir. Rant coming, people of a delicate nature stop reading now....

You are all correct, the words were changed temporarily in 1983 but inexplicably have stuck which just goes to show how incredibly, brainlessly stupid a lot of Brighton fans are. Anybody who sings "Going up TO win the Cup" is an addle-brained, knuckle-dragging, imbecilic Grade A moron of the first order. Sing the right words for crying out loud or are you all so stupid that you don't in fact realise that what you are singing doesn't make any sense?

Ok, you can all look again now, I've finished.

But when we were in the Top Division it made no sense at all to sing about "going up" - at least as an activity separate from winning the cup.

"Going up (to Wembley) to win the cup", on the other hand, does make sense.

But since when has anyone expected sense to be a big factor in the work of Norman Wisdom? Although when he wrote this we weren't in the First Division and it did made sense at the time.
