When did (night) clubs stop making blokes wear strides to get in?

Those of us of a certain age will remember Saturday nights were all about dressing up for a night on the pull & then having to face the inspection of the bouncers at places like Sherry's, (then the Coconut) or Buzby's. You had to have shoes on as well, as trainers always meant an early night, or a long wait for your mates in Grubbs!
So when did it happen that you didn't have to get done up likes a dogs dinner to get in somewhere?

Wasn't it awful tho? You'd have to get dressed up like you were going to a wedding (I remember lots of people wearing ties) just to get in to your local Cinderellas Rockerfellas or wherever. And all so you could listen to terrible music and drink weak lager in the faint hope that you might cop off with some girl with ridiculous big hair.

Must have died out in the late 80s, around the time of the Acid House rave scene and the 'second summer of love'. No-one wore ties and strides in the Hacienda...

Er, think it's the same every except Brighton.

I've not encountered it anywhere in the UK but I'm not usually going in to absolute shitholes.

Its dying out here too, the last club that required it in my area (marvellously called "Happy Out" which I always thought made it sound like a gay bar in Margate) went out of business a few months back.

Most of the people who got in their by meeting the dress code don't get in to any other clubs in the town for being scum anyway.

Most people now wear boat shoes, Fred Perry's or plimsolls from topman on student nights. On a Saturday I would say it's more smart black.

I used to run a big indie night in Wolverhampton at the civic hall, one night this group of blokes came down all suited up and pissed and we wouldn't let them in. They told us they were from the local rag the express & star and that they would do a hatchett job on us if we didnt let them in. Told them to f*** off. Lo and behold we were front page monday with an article saying how we didnt let people with suits on in. f***ing idiots, it was PR we could only dream of.
