because each cpu is a different "socket" so you get a motherboard that accepts the same "socket"

tbh if you dont know much about computer hardware, just buy a dell, you barely even save much money by making your own now

if you buy an athlon processor for instance, you will need to make sure that the motherboard you buy with it is athlon compatible

there are websites out there which tell you what cpu's are compatible with motherboards.
