Ladies and Gents, we are down to the business end of WHC IX. These eight combatants have shown their mettle to get this far and are now just two victories away from the Animal Dome. If they thought getting here was tough it's going to get off the wall serious from here on in. The slightest weakness, even just the merest hint of a possible weakness will see their hopes and dreams, all they've worked for, torn to shreds and left-if any thing is left at all-fluttering in the breeze. Shit is serius now.

So, to the draw. The combatants numbers are:

1 - Salt Water Crocodile
2 - Wolverine
3 - Siberian Tiger
4 - Honey Badger
5 - Great White Shark
6 - Hippo
7- Grasshopper Mouse
8 - Malayan Sun Bear

O.K, the balls are in the bag, they've been given a good mix. The first number is...

The second quarter final will be...

number5, the great white shark

and he'll be battling against...

number 7. Thats the grasshopper mouse. I think I'm correct in saying neither of these beasts has made it to the semi finals before, so this is a fantastic opportunity for one of them.

O.K. Quarter final three will be:

number 1. The Salt water croc. He's a formidable opponent for any of the remaining competitors- a four time finalist and reigning champion.

He'll be facing off against...

number 3. The Siberian Tiger. He's having a fine tournament. He's already seen off one champion -the Orca- in the previous round so will feel confident of repeating the trick.

That leaves our final quarter final to be contested by number 8. The Malayan Sun Bear. This is uncharted territory for the M.S.B who is in only his second ever WHC competition. He gave the African Elephant a good kicking in the last round. Can he repeat the trick against....

number 4, Honey Badger. The self styled 'peoples champ' is a three times beaten finalist and is a regular in the semi finals. Will he get there this year?

That concludes the draw for the quarter finals of WHC IX. The ties will be played in the week commencing Jan 25th.

Lovely stuff. Finally feels like the tide is turning and more and more people are beginning to understand the "personality" of this competition.

Wolverine
Siberian Tiger
Honey Badger
Grasshopper Mouse
Malayan Sun Bear

Be happy with pretty much any of them winning.

By my reckoning five of the eight quarter finalists (S.T, G.W.S, M.S.B, Wolverine and G.M) have never made the final. Could this be a turning point? Or will the old guard show why they're the old guard and make up three quarters of the semi finalists?

The People’s Champion has registered 120 votes to date in 2016 making it the highest scoring beast so far. The Great White has amassed 107 votes but both of these had very favourable 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] round draws against relatively easy opposition. Both will expect a strong run but both have limited chances of taking out the title for different reasons (respectively: mod corruption and bottling)

The Siberian Tiger has impressed; the 77 votes it received in demolishing the Orca was the largest number of votes any tiger has received in WHC history (previous highest was 53 in the 2010 QF). However the Wolverine trounced it in Group B and will be expecting to better it’s previous best of a semi final appearance in 2015. From there, who knows?

The Hippo has only failed to reach the semis on one occasion, and has scored higher in the first two rounds this year than it has done since it’s memorable trot to the title in 2010. In other words it’s looking VERY strong. The Grasshopper Mouse will be many people’s outsider of choice, and we’ve seen this sort of groundswell take other low profile beasts all the way before. Facing the GWS is probably one of the easier QF draws, and it’s certainly a decent outside bet at a final place.

Another animal with nothing to prove is the Malayan Sun Bear. A phenomenal debut season, a solid scalp in the form of the Elephant and only beaten in the group stage by the Salt Water Crocodile which, despite having amassed the lowest number of votes so far amongst the remaining beasts will probably go on and win the whole thing again. Beating the Grizzly was the 25th group or match-up victory it has won to date - a WHC record.

Why do insects never make it very far? I don't get it ??? Imagine a 10ft tall preying mantis, that'd be absolutely pant-fillingly terrifying.

I reckon it's because lots of what they do it purely a chemical reaction and they have no consciousness of what they're up to. It's different somehow to a hippo going berserk and eating a boat.

or even better a BOOK
