this seems to be a differance of opinions when it comes to the actual definition of a "big club"

is it- past success? fan base? or what?

I think you have hit the nail on the head there. its fan base and past success for me. I think we should be in the lower half of division 2 (championship).

so, what about a team who has had lots of success, but have a fan base that isn't large in proportion?

are chelsea a big club? they've had more success recently than the likes of liverpool, so are they bigger than liverpool?

or

what about teams that have large fan bases, but have had little success?

are man city or newcastle big clubs?

When people use the term 'Big Club' it usually refers to a team with massive support but are doing f*** all in the league, ie Leeds Utd, Wolves. Sleeping Giant is a phrase used by managers, just appointed, desperate to show the fans they mean business and most are usually sacked within 8-12 months. I love the word 'Usually':clap2:

HISTORY makes you a big club, in my opinion, not money.

For me, Liverpool will always represent the biggest club in the country. Man Utd are slowly catching up, but need to win more trophies.
