I once had four numbers on the lottery, was one digit out for the fifth number and also had the Bonus Ball...

Paid £78, BUT...

Five numbers and the bonus ball paid 1/4 million that draw :censored:

1 team has let me down for £2/3/400 about 5 or 6 times.

Had a win on the Pools around 1982. Got 6 out of the 7 score draws that day. I remember vividly Leeds 1 Sheffield United 1 was the one that got away.

I won £315 instead of 715 grand..............

Er, is 1-1 not a draw?

Brighton let me down on an accumulator once.

Would've won around £800 I think it was.

An aquaintance told me a story about her Dad getting eight draws on the pools, when there were only eight draws and only winning a matter of hundreds, because...

He'd used the numbers picked by a newspaper tipster, and hundreds of people used the same numbers

I was once one number out on the Withdean Wager - if I'd been 20 seconds earlier I'd have won £400.

The worst was when England played Croatia at Wembley two years ago. I was convinced that Croatia were going to win 3-2. I was about to place my bet when my (Scottish) colleague persuaded me not to "When have England ever conceded three goals at home in an important game," he said. That's the last time I'll ever listen to a Sweaty about anything.

When the lottery first started I was having dinner 1 Saturday night and my mother in law brought her lottery numbers in for me to check and she had got the jackpot. When we checked the actual receipt the 6 numbers were the ones she had done for the previous week and not that week. So near yet so far from a fortune.

had the first 3 winners in a yankee once, the forth was running at Longchamp which, as some of the racing gurus on here will vouch, has two winning posts, anyhoo, my last one was in front at the first post when jockey (Therry Jarnet) stopped riding, it's not much of a distance, but enough to get pipped. cost me a grand

I've won 2 grand (and spent it next night-thats how you know you had a gambling problem)

But I came very close to winning 17 grand (1 pound stake) in the FA Cup 3rd round this year.

15-fold accumulator and West Brom had to win - they conceded in the dying minutes to Burnley!

Not fortunes, but I had a small wager on Burnley to progress in the Carling Cup semi second leg at 25-1, when they were 4-0 down to Spurs from the first leg, having dismissed the 40-1 on offer for them to win 4-0 (the ninety minute score)

Was still hopeful, until Spurs knocked in a couple late in extra time to nick it

Many many years ago, I did a £10 win treble, (I might not even have been old enough to bet).
It was at Chester

Merango won 9-2
Bay Bay won 7-2

This is where my memory loses it a little, a will say

Grey Salute 2nd 10-1,

By the shortest of short heads, to The Thirsty Farmer, although those horses might be the other way round.
It doesn't change the fact that as a school boy I was an inch away from a couple of grand.

Got 13 out of 15 results right in Loto Sportif once (French equivalent of football pools). The other two games I had predicted correctly until second half injury time.

What would have been 200,000 francs (around 20K) ended up as 90...

This has led to a lifelong dislike of Le Havre & Nice, the two sides who scored the late goals :censored:
