What's the best site for downloading music?

Recently got myself a new pc (the old one was very old, and struggling) and I now have the capability to 'burn' music onto CD.

Whey hey, all this talk of downloading CD's for buttons that is driving the profits out of the mega rich music companies, suddenly I can join in.

Hmm, Napster have gone legal and the price appears to be about £9-10 per CD. Not clever as I can buy the originals cheaper than that if I search around. Maybe that's just them, what about the rest

But .... there seem a lot of them about and they all want a subscription up front. Some eg, thedownloadplace.com make it sound brilliant. Ooh, just one payment of $29.95 and I have unlimited downloads for a year. But are they 'free' downloads? Surely not, that would be just so cheap, but I can't see prices anywhere.

What's everyone's experience? Where's good, where's bad. There's just too much choice and they all want money, I'm going dizzy.

Help .....

I used Shareaza till I started *buying music*

Buying music? What's that all about. I intend to stop doing that hence the new pc.

Well, it kind of, err, keeps people making music... most acts wouldn't be arsed to make any (or anywhere near as much) if they weren't getting paid enough to avoid working

Then again, I get a lot of dance free legitimately, so I don't have to buy as much....

Also, why did you need a new PC for filesharing? I ran Napster for BeOS in the days when it was free and illlegal, on a 75Mhz Pentium 1 with a 540MB HDD. Burnt the music off to CD's or onto Zip disks

Hrrm, true

On that note, it looks like Busted have nicked the intro from New Order's Dream Attack for their current track, the bastards.

I have tried several over the years..WIMX is not bad but you may have to wait in line for ages for a song..

Grokster is not bad but full of adverts clogging you up..

just got Limewire today, seems rather good !

mind you the graphics are a bit scratchy......you can get it at CNET it is a free download. Just go cnet>downloads>MP3 players > scroll down till you get there at hit Download..

First song you should get is Belle and Sebastian ..Wrapped Up In Books.......it rocks !

I needed a new pc because the old one was very slowly dying, and at the ripe old age of 7, it's not surprising.

are these sites allowing u to download albums and as gritty asks are they free?:shootself

Yeah, exactly, that's pretty much what I'm getting at. There seem plenty that appear to be a one-off subscription fee, then "unlimited downloads" or even "unlimited free downloads" but are they really?

Great suggestions guys, and it gives me some others to look at, but can you let me know how much they are costing you?

Cheers
