That was my understanding too. Grateful for any advice too. Want one for web and basic writing ie Microsoft word. Any advice on decent such laptops and best place to purchase would be most appreciated.

Try the Apple Refurb Store. You can pick up some really good bargains and come with the standard Apple warranty.

I've bought from the refurb store on several occasions, but you're not getting an Apple laptop, even refurb for under £700.

Current iPad however, £359

For email, web, basic word processing, this has to be a consideration.

I've an iPad 2 and do an incredible amount on it now, including most of my photo edits, letter writing, emails and web. Apps like Ebay and Amazon also make using their sites so much easier than conventional browers.

Not just iPad either, tablets in general are good value for simple home computer use.

A 'new iPad' plus one of these would do most people just fine now.

Failing that, I would (of course) suggest picking up a used MacBook Pro or Air (depending on your need for on-board storage). If nothing else, it will hold most of the purchase value should you want to get shot.

When buying cheap and new make sure it has a HDMI connection. If not, you might as well buy secondhand for £150 which I did. I prefer desktops for home working.

What you have to do though, is get your head round using a tablet as it is different to the drag and drop nature of a desktop. I can only speak for my personal iPad use, but it doesn't have a file and folder structure like a typical desktop, files integrated with the apps which sort out how they are stored. It takes a bit of time to changing the way you use it to get the best out of it. You have to make use of cloud services like the iCloud, or Dropbox, Sugarsync etc.

There are many articles and forum threads to help you on this. I wouldn't say it's difficult, but it's like learning some things again. That said all very intuitive.

Well, the iPad 2 is a massive hit in our house. From my 2 year old son turning it on, flicking through and starting up his build a train set app, to me using it for work showing clients drawings, or as said photo edits, to watching TV and loads of other things, it really is a lovely piece of kit to use. Very tactile, gorgeous to hold, and as my 2 year old will testify, very intuitive. I don't think you'd regret it. (I can only comment on the iPad 2 as I've not used any other tablet...).

If its just for home? I recommend the iPad3 £399 we have a laptop somewhere? The problem is I haven't seen it since we bought the iPad. Haven't needed it
