Mr Brown was the one who scared the shite out of most of us.

And who could ever forget the headmaster Trethowan headbutting a pupil after the Warden Park v Oathall dust up.

Mr Lowe was worse than Mr Brown imo. And I do not remember the headbutting incident at all - are you sure that happened? If so, where did it happen? I remember the first assembly back after the dust up - best described as intimidating!

Yep, in the main hall. Everyone who was involved were told to stay behind after the Assembly and Trethowan went totally bonkers.

I forget the boy's name but he was known as a hard case, Trethowan grabed him and laid a nut on him, not hard but a nut all the same.

I was sitting quietly trying not to get eye contact with him while pooing myself.

Ok, thanks for that. I was pooing myself in that assembly and I was not involved!

Was the first list from Hertford Rd school...second thoughts we had Normans,Saxons,Danes,Britons. They had an air raid shelter under the playground...still there though boarded up. Each house had a colour,Normans Green,Saxons yellow,Danes Red,Britons blue. In the hall there was an movable image of the tribes climbing a ladder, when each house earned a merit the warrior would climb one rung...forget what the prize was for getting to the top for the winning house....well it was 69 years ago.
Yes it was Hertford Road. Miss Young was head and then Mr Hickman.

Presumably that was the one in Southwick? When I went to there, they were
Arundel (red)
Bramber (yellow)
Hastings (green)
Lewes (blue) - mine

Yep, the one opposite Kings Manor

Lewes and Arundel hadn't changed when I got there, but Bramber had became Green and Pevensey had taken over from Hastings and wore Yellow.

Probably changed again since I left 10 years ago, seeming it's now from Reception through to Year 6.

At my middle school it was:

Amberley-Red
Bramber-Green
Hastings-Blue
Lewes-Yellow (myself)

When I was there circa 1999-2003 sports days were always a two horse race between Bramber & Hastings, with the other two left to fight it out for third.

Loved reading through this thread! The sort of thing you'd see Danny Baker talk about on his show (and knowing him, probably already has!)!

My mum was a teacher in the Mid Sussex at the time and something to do with the NUT so I got to see some of our teachers outside the school environment. Strangely I got on OK with Mr Brown, or Kevin as he was known round our house, and in school I always managed to deflect my inadequacies on to some other poor chump in his lessons. Trethowan was a true legend and fierce in school, but again as friend of my mother's I got to see the human side of him and he was a good bloke. Even then he could still strike fear into my heart at the end of term assembly where he traditionally balled someone out and sent them to his office.

Agreed, Brown was a pussycat compared to Lowe. Christ I remember that assembly, the fear in the room was palpable!
