What wages could/should we pay

Given that when someone mentions a potential player on here half of NSC say we couldn't afford the wages, and when another player is mentioned the other half say 'not good enough'.

What is the general view of what weekly wage we should be paying to the ideal striker?

Concensus is that we could have paid Murray more than 7-10k if Gus wanted, what do you think we could go up to?

15, 20, 25..... whatever it takes?

Average annual pay for Championship player was £250,000 in 2009 or 5k a week.

I've heard that GM was on £3k per week, was offered £9k and took £12k that was on offer at palarse. I personally don't think that GM would be worth £12k per week and that there are better and more proven options available for that sort of wage. I also think the board will pay what they think is the right wage for the club, for the player that Gus wants.

I think the board has the money for the right player. Just because Gl*nn wasn't offered what he wanted, doesn't mean that offer (or better) wouldn't be on the table for someone who fits Gus's bill perfectly.

My pure speculation would be that we can offer around 6.5k/7k a week. Should be enough for Championship quality but Strikers always seem to demand more.

There's a fair bit in the sports news about players wages and how some clubs are almost being crippled by it. The players also get priority over other creditors etc.

Keeping them low is sensible and sustainable, many other clubs are looking to do the same (not Palarse obviously - and that will bite them in the bum) so there will be a gradual wage deflation for the next few years IMO. It's a serious issue for clubs in the PL (esp if they get relegated) so expect less wages there (apart from the top 6/8 clubs who don't have the danger of being relegated and have rich bankrollers). AFAIR FIFA have set in some rules regarding debt, possibly not extensive enough.

None of us know what the club can afford because we can only speculate on income vs expenditure, and we have no idea what Bloom is putting in, player wise.

I certainly don't want to end up like Pompey.

I posted this before and I thought that £5K a week was top whack as a basic, with, perhaps, bonuses for wins, position in the table, and relegation contract reduction (God forbid!).

One of the commentators for the Man Utd Blackpool game last Sunday mentioned all Blackpool players were paid the same £10k per week for this season in The Premiership. Paying more than £10k per week for players in The Championship seems over the top to me. Its not as if many Championship players can kick accurately with both feet, make every tackle, and get every shot on target. 52 weeks at £10,000 pw = £520,000pa. Nice work if you can get it. Even half that seems more than most Championship players are worth.

I'd think an average of £4.5k pw over a squad of 25 is reaonable for a decent Champ side. That means your top players will be around £10k and your fringe on £1-3k pw. Thats a total wage bill of £5.8m out of ticket sale revenue of £8m+. You then have TV money and other commercial revenue (Sponsorship, Hospitality, Shirts, matchday etc) on top which one would expect to be significantly higher now at The Amex (If the club are doing their job properly). That sound perfectly sustainable to me.

It has been reported that Bradley Johnson is not renewing his contract with Leeds because he wants £6k per week if that is true then the average wage should be set at about £5-6k per week in order that we can compete with other clubs both on and off the field. Only TB knows if that is a viable figure and I am sure that if it isnt he wouldnt pay it.

If Glenn Murray is on 12k per week at Palace then surely that will lead to discontent/trouble within their squad. Several Palace fans, posting on their own and our forums , are adamant that no current player at Palace is on more than 10K per week.

Paying Murray over the odds will lead to increased demands from others - still financial problems doesn't seem to bother them in Sainsbury's land.

If we offered him 9K then I guess that is our limit - still seems a decent whack to me.

He is on less than 9k trust me on that.You offered 7.k which is a good whack.

Dont think you can put an answer to this really. Each player we may or may not sign will be judged on his age, experence and what Poyet/Bloom belive is his value to the team. I honestly belive that the reason we did not pay Murray what he was looking for, is because come August the 6th he would not have been 1st choice striker, maybe not even 2nd and thats a lot of money to pay a bench warmer. He will be long forgotten soon, me thinks.

If you are right then there was not a lot of difference in wages. Must have been something else that made Albion not go that extra mile. I think you have got a decent but complex player in Murray.

Usually players get what they deserve. One reason to not players over the odds is team harmony. I expect most workers resent others who are thinking they are getting paid over the odds. Glenn Murray strikes me as someone who works hard at his game rather then being a natural talent (not such thing really?). He is not that much above the rest of the players. Just twenty or so goals.

A top price of £10,000 a week sounds sensible but I'd expect a lot of players are closer to £5,000. That would still put us spending nearly £8m a year on wages

Maybe Gus just didn't like his attitude, offered a decent wage that he thought was fair, but had no problem if Murray just f***ed off.

I think it's too simplistic to just give a top end figure across the board. Strikers will always command more, so if £5k is an average wage in the whole division, then I wouldn't be surprised if something like £8-10k is the average for the strikers. Seeing as a number of teams bump this average up with ridiculous, unsustainable wages, or Premiership wages that they are stuck with following relegation, I would also hope we are below average, and working within our means.

Indeed, and I think it's not really anybodys business except the player and the club.
