When mums say "it's the thought that counts" I genuinely think they mean it. So think a bit? A whole batch of little things you've thought about might be better than a big gesture.

So - a bar of her favourite choc. Lavender filled pillows are good if she hasn't been sleeping. Go round and cook her favourite meal and put some candles on the table. Does she write a lot of letters - then writing paper? Chanel No.5 bubble bath. Does she drink a lot of gin? Does she have interests in particular TV stars/always wanted to travel the world? You can order some great books on Amazon.

On their own these things are a bit naff - but if you put them all in a big box and write something slushy on the front - here's hoping next year is even better or something - i think she'd be impressed.
