I can't work for the private sector. Decided a few years ago that a day without group or social worth is nothing and empty for me. Yeah, i arse about a bit on the internet, but the idea that each daily time is a closed grey hole that i daren't venture out of sends me angry inside.
Just me though. Innit.

Private, inasmuch as I have my own little software company. However most of my work (and currently all of it) comes from Government contracts. I would be in trouble if there was ever a serious clampdown on government 'waste', however successive governments (including the Tories) show no sign of doing this.

Are you saying that all private sector jobs are socially worthless?
(Where have I had this argument before...)

Its only a personal loss, for me. I can't get excited about a stranger with his own well-pencilled card making a series of thousands each day after the work of me or my colleagues. The demand is to make his life better for 8 of my hours, 5 days a week. I can barely even wave that thought farewell.
Currently, the bits of paper i push and the phonecalls i have are there to improve the scenarios and lifestyles of health patients and medical professionals. I also make sure they are good at what they offer. I get paid to be a tiny part of lives.

Other people can do what they want though. I ain't any type of minister.

You can have a socially rewarding life in the private sector surely?

A drug designer at a large pharmaceutical company who creates treatments for HIV, cancer etc.
A commercial pilot who flies aid to disaster hit countries.
A mid-wife in a private hospital.
A production line worker in a tractor factory whose tractors are exported to poor countries to improve their ability to farm efficiently for themselves.
A city whiz kid who invests your grannies pension successfully giving her an easier retirement.
A private contractor emptying the bins in central London.

Just a few examples (yes some corny I know). The private sector is not just about making money. The money it does generate though provides a better standard of living for all of us. Am I socially worthless because I am a tiny cog in the global finance machine? Also don't forget that the government (or charities for that matter) would not have any money to spend if the private sector did not generate it in the first place.

I work and have worked for both. Public is more laid back but tends to have too many jobsworths. Private varies depending on industry. Currently it's private but generally easy going.

The language of the majority of private sector work, i would imagine, is not of constant betterment of nations and poor people. It's about making what you can and gaining at the expense at what is least likely to fight. Sell, sell, sell. Trick. Win. Compete. Defraud. Belittle. Grow. Smooth. Wear nicer clothes.
As i say, my thoughts are mine and said, but i don't look down on people who want to make cash. Its not the same as me, but i am not the best or an overall solution. I can't find reasons to spend time seeking rewards from what i do for others elsewhere. Seems an excuse to hide the guilt of my activity.
Of course, one day, i shall selfishly write a novel. Just don't want to consider the wounds of each day and the thoughts that are attached. I just wanna smile a bit.
:)
