Same ground, but 5 years earlier. Lost 5-1. It chucked it down. We were locked in for 30 mins after the final whistle and had to listen to endless radio commentaries of their 5 goals.
I went to a lot in the first season and pretty much all of them second season and I honestly can't remember us winning. I'm know we did, it's just the overwhelming stench of misery and mirth is all my memory can muster
There was a couple of weeks at the Goldstone when we lost 8-2 at home to Bristol Rovers with Bannister & Warboys sharing the eight (5&3 I think). One of the next few home games we lost 4-0 to Walton & Hersham in the cup. I can't quite remember, but I think Brian Powney was the goalkeeper, certainly was against Rovers. That tested ones support I can tell you. These days the manager would have been sacked at halftime........
That his name. I have an irrational (or possibly rational you decide) hatred of that man. In the away game, I was standing behind the goal and during break in play he turned round to us with a big grin on his face and said "how do you fancy Gillingham next season then lads" (referring to our imminent loss of our beloved Goldstone and having to face a trip to dog shit central every other week) I was incensed and told him to f*** off. Clearly too loudly as shortly afterwards I was escorted out of the ground. I have never before or since been in any sort of trouble at any match and I have hated said keeper.
