Trinidad & Tobago assistant manager Wim Rijsbergen has launched an attack on David Beckham ahead of the World Cup clash with England.

The Real Madrid midfielder has had to endure criticism from a wide range of sources despite his immense value to Sven Goran Eriksson's side.

It was the England captain's free kick that led to Carlos Gamarra scoring the own goal that settled the Group B opener against Paraguay and there is no doubt that, based on the evidence of the first round of matches, Beckham has one of the best dead-ball deliveries in the game.

However, Rijsbergen is not impressed with the former Manchester United star.

"Beckham is better at selling shirts than winning football games," he claimed.

"He has a great success at Real Madrid doing that but he hasn't won any important competition since he arrived in Spain.

"Beckham is only a commercial player.

"You can see him playing at Real Madrid. He doesn't have any kind of commitment with the team.

"He doesn't give anything different to his team but, in the commercial aspect, he is brilliant and that is great for the club.

"But that isn't enough on a football pitch."

Beckham gets a chance to make Rijsbergen pay for his comments in Thursday's clash in Nuremberg when he leads England out looking to clinch the victory that would take them into the next round.

What a wanker this bloke is :salute: :tosser:

Winding Beckham up can certainly make him play better but I think that the petulance which caused such problems in France in 1998 is also still lurking in there somewhere; maybe he's appealing to that.

Thats one way to get him motivated any way. I Predict Beckham tearing apart T & T and scoring at least one.

Yep, a clear wind-up attempt.

Remember that Beckham is the only England player who's been sent off twice - an amazing achievement when you think of the number of caps won by the likes of Jack Charlton, Nobby Stiles, Norman Hunter and Peter Storey.

i think he's moved on from his petulant past. winding him up now will be very counterproductive!

4-0 england, joe cole first scorer. you read it here first! 45-1 odds

These types of comments are clearly designed to wind the Beckham and the England team up, but as we know, it can go both ways, either making the players even more determined, and they play better, or make them angry, and play worse.

A test of character, and an increasingly familiar part of the modern game of which Messers Ferguson/Wenger/Mourinho are experts

I have to say I agree with a lot of what he says.

The Beckham dead ball wins games against lesser opposition but England really need a player with pace and trickery to beat their man against the best teams.

I'm not a massive Beckham fan of recent seasons, although he has done the business in the last couple of months, however I beleive Real Madrid fans LOVE him for his commitment in a team of can't be arsed most of the time superstars, so that comment is total bollocks

so that he was suspended for a match we were likely to win anyway, rather than have a yellow looming over him, when a yellow i nthe following fixtures would have seen him miss poland/austria

But those players were playing in an era where you had to virtually kill someone before you got booked, let alone sent off.

Worth remembering that Beckham has only been sent off one more time than that midfield animal Ray Wilkins....

not that amazing when you consider how easy it is to get sent off these days compared with 20/30/40 years ago.

Beckham's grown up a lot since then.

My bet of Beckham first goalscorer and England to win 3-0 is looking alright.
