What England really need.

Is to get the foreign players out of the premiership. Then good quality English players will get a chance to play in the Champions league and develop their skills at the top level, instead their talent is just being stifled and frittered away in the Championship.

Wenger ( foreign ), has he got an English squad?

Ferguson, has he got a predominantly English squad?

Benitez ( or his replacent ) ( foreign ), has he got a predominantly English squad?

That bloke at Chelsea ( foreign ), has he got a predominantly English squad?

Man City, have they got a predominantly English squad?

OK, I'll be even more radical, we need less foreign managers in the Premiership, and a cap on the number of foreign players. The managers that remain MUST be FORCED to develop home grown players. And it's the FA's job to make sure this happens.

I'd rather have Leon Knight up front than Wayne Rooney, that just tells you how bad it's become.

It's the only way, the ONLY way.............

I don't see how the Premier League or foreign players in the Premier League can take any of the blame. Let's look back at the 70's , 80's and early 90's before the Premier League was created and the England football team were still shit. Premier League clubs sign foreign players because the English ones aren't good enough; same reason that Inter didn't use many (any?) Italians last season in Serie A. All that will happen if clubs are forced to start with x amount of English players is that the standard would drop, crowds would drop, interest will drop and the English football team will still be SHIT.

The problems with developing young English players are much more deeply rooted than blaming the Premier League.

I think the opposite, England players need to go abroad to further their careers and their footballing development. If they're good enough and can't make it here they should be able to make it in other foreign leagues and may learn the art of playing against other cultures which can only serve them well for future campaigns.

The fact we were the only squad at the World Cup to pick from purely players out of our own national league tells us everything.

I didn't say they can't play over here, just that they can't play in the Premiership.

They should be allowed to play at Championship level and below ONLY. When a team gets promoted into the prem then they have to offer their foreign players to other Championship clubs ( like the US do for their best gridiron players in the college draw ).

But if they play overseas they won't get picked, how long did it take for Owen Hargreaves to get a cap? Has Colin Kazim-Richards become an England contender because he plays for Fenerbace, no, he knew he had no chance and opted for Turkey instead. They have to be playing here to get noticed.

Trouble is, unless a minimum English player quota was forced upon the PL, most prem clubs can't afford to buy championship and league one players whose clubs have whacked their prices up because they think every prem team is loaded.

Not many prem clubs are prepared to gamble on a £2-3m player who's virtually unheard of. Bloody shame because i'd love to see some lower league players given the chance.

I read something yesterday, that Spain has more qualified coaches who are teaching JUST in schools, that there are in the whole of the UK.

Their kids are being taught from the age of 5, how to play football properly, to think about the game, to feel comfortable controlling the ball. We are ligt years away from this.

The parents/teachers etc who run the local football team/teach sport haven't got a scooby doo how to teach the game. All they want to do is win; not teach the kids how to play.

There are loads of foreign players in Spain though, so it can't be quite that simple.

Even outside the so-called superstars (Kaka, Ronaldo, Messi, Ibrahimovic etc) you still have plenty of fairly average South Americans with convenient Spanish or Portuguese passports clogging up the league outside the Barcelona and Real Madrid duopoly.

The foreign players didn't stop Xavi and Iniesta breaking through: the truth is, if you're good enough you will get there. Our young players coming through are just not at that level so the overseas players will get picked every time.

There are loads in Italy too. I know they did badly this time but they were the WC holders and were knocked out of Euro 2008 by Spain (on pens) so they have a decent recent record.

If players only got performance related bonuses instead of a stupidly high wage, they would have to earn their money, instead of beating up team mates, shagging each others WAGS and playing shit on matchdays and still getting £100k

I agree with this. If they want to earn crazy high wages it might convince them to move to Spain or Italy and actually learn something too.

I can't be bothered to search through the archives of NSC, but I bet if you did that for World Cups in 2006, 2002, 1998 (does it go back that far??) and the European Championships in the interim period, you'd find us all saying EXACTLY the same things EVERY time. It's the coaches. It's the foreign players. It's the English mentality. It's the Premier League greed. It's the grass roots football.

We always do it...and then the proper season starts and we forget every word, fall for the Sky MEGA-ULTRA-STUPENDOUS-SUNDAY- ARENT-WE-GREAT crap, and carry on in the same vein until the time comes to fail again.
