What do we think about Southampton?

Horrible little club with ideas above their station.

Very much the Margo Leadbetter of the footballing world.

I can't stand them. Not only the 78 stitch up* - the other thing that did it for me at the time was the regional TV coverage which, with the studios being based in Southampton, was so incredibly biased it was disgusting (Bobin, for one, was a season ticket holder at the Dell). In the weekly football round ups, we'd get extensive coverage of Southampton but Brighton barely warranted a mention - even if we were above them in the table. Every week we'd just get wall-to-wall McMenemy. When Southampton got to the Cup Final, the local presenters wore Southampton scarves and rosettes the day before the match - they definitely didn't do that in 83. And when they signed Keegan, you could barely switch on the telly without them going on and on and on about it.

They also had a horrible, poxy ground. I went to the opening game of the 77/78 season and could see roughly a third of the pitch.

* For the benefit of 7:18 - we needed to beat Blackpool to go up, Spurs needed a point, Southampton were up already but needed a point to win the title. We beat Blackpool in front of 34,000 at the Goldstone, Southampton drew 0-0 with Spurs, denying us promotion on goal difference. Worst of all the two managers, McMenemy and Burkinshaw, held their hands aloft and waved at the fans BEFORE the match had even kicked off. There was barely a shot from either side in the entire 90 minutes. Obscene.

I won't - remember Arrogant Adkins comment after the St Mary's match:

Interviewer: "Do you think it will be you and Brighton battling it out for promotion at the end of the season?"

Adkins: "If they can keep up with us, yes".

Anyone want to remind Adkins of his comments when they visit the Withdean and they are still way behind us...?

Dont like Southampton but I think the win against Hudds was a good result for us as it still keeps a 3 point buffer rather than a 1 point as it would have been if they had lost.
As long as the 5 teams under us keep getting this type of result or getting draws against each other things should go in our favour.

I like that stat.
Yes, this.

Southampton: meh. (which is what they think about us, most of the time)

Mind you, I'll chuckle heartily if we deny them promotion by letting Huddersfield stroll to victory on the penultimate day of the season (as long as we're already promoted, obviously)

I'd like them to stay in contention until the 3rd minute of injury time in the last game of the season and then to concede and drop out of the top two that they'd recently arrived in. I'd then like to see them fail at the 1st hurdle in the playoffs badly. 6-1 aggregate would be perfect.

Don't like em, arrogant club with ideas above their current station and seem to believe they have the god given right to go up. They are what Leeds were when they were down here.

Saying that I hope Brighton, Charlton and Southampton go up this season as they are good close away days.

Nothing against them personally apart from their mild Leeds type attitude but you have to accept they are a bigger club than us (right now) and have played at a higher level than for far longer than we have. Unlike the likes of Portsmouth and Leeds they did pay off all their debts thanks to a benefactor the same as we will.

Still say if we finish above them we will go up. Having said that with their front line they should be doing far better than they are doing and who knows what happens when they lose Oxlade-Chamberlain

In their position they don't need to sell Chamberlain and I doubt they will as they'll get a hell of a lot more for him in a couple of seasons time.

for the younger generation (I was born in 87) can you please enlighten us?

Last game of the sesson them vs Spurs and us playing at home if we win and either of the othe other two win the loser doesnt go up. We won and they kicked off 5 mins late and then contrived a draw, after knowing our result played the ball around the centre circle to each other to get a draw and both Saints and Spurs promoted. The FL did nothing about it said that it was a genuine result

I don't think it's Oxlade-Chamberlain who's driving them at the moment, I mean he looks a good player but I don't think they're dependent on him.
