I don't get this whole "Brighton isn't REALLY a City" bollocks. What do you think constitutes a City?

A City is a place that is important in one or more of the following facets:

-> Religious
-> Cultural
-> Educational
-> Pschological (i.e. in the Nation's psyche)

and has nothing to do with population. Brighton is certainly important on the last three counts. It does, also have a bigger population that most of the cities in this country. Have you been to St Davids? Wells? Lichfield?

I haven't been to enough places globally to name a top five really, but in the UK I would say:

Brighton
Bristol
Leeds
Glasgow
Nottingham

A City is a place that is important in one or more of the following facets:

-> Religious

religious - no cathedral - go on then tell me its the same size as noahs ark and all that bollocks still does not change anything

cultural - if half the cast of eastenders and self obsessed sunday columnists living here counts as being a hot bed of culture then - tick

educational - its not 2 universities, its one plus a poly like most towns

in the nations physche - a seaside resort. liverpool manchester leeds sheffield glasgow etc etc are provincial british cities in the nations psyche. brighton is a holiday resort to them.

dont get me wrong i love the town but its not a city. did you grow up calling it a city? i never.
