A few people are showing their ignorance here. That's a very shrewd signing and gets a big  in my book.

Exactly what we needed at the back, and a lot better than people are giving him credit for. I've seen him play a fair few times for Fulham and we're lucky to have him. Experienced and capable.

Straight replacement for Matt Upson.

If we leave ourselves open playing attacking football, we need someone quicker at the back.

Feel pleased as punch as we've bought young Aaron Hughes, an exciting prospect from Newcastle United, with Premier League experience, from under the nose of all the other clubs after him such as Aston Villa, Fulham and QPR. Fantastic singing by Sami. Should fit in well at the heart of defence.

Sounds OK to me. Experienced and a replacement for Upson.

When I got the email that 'Hypia makes Hughes first signing', I thought (hoped) it was Will Hughes.

Clicked open and saw Aaron Hughes, abit underwhelming :(

Still, lets hope its a great signing, only time will tell.

Not the most exciting signing as I don't think he did very well at QPR last season but adds to our depleted numbers I suppose.

He had Dunne and Hill in the pecking order ahead of him, not many clubs had the squad QPR did last year!

Every single season the bedwetters have worried that we haven't signed somebody and every single season we sign players decent enough to make us competitive.

Hughes is a decent signing. In terms of impact and quality, I'm guessing he'll be on a par with Stephen Ward.

Happy with this. He is an experienced international defender who has spent his career in the Premiership. He can play in a number of defensive positions which gives the manager a few options and particularly in the case of injury.

what is our budget?

It's the amount of money we are allowed to spend on players, but that's not important right now......... Well it is important, but that would spoil the Airplane allusion.

But Sami, who has played against him, describes him as "intelligent", which sounds promising.

How do we pronounce his name? Is he an old fashioned Airon or is the he a new fangled Arron.

Has always played in the number 18 apparantly. Will JFC be vacating it for a number in the 2-11 range ? ???

Wonder why he is late of QPR? I suppose they didn't rate him or did he come here for better wages?

Solid if unspectacular signing, but I thinks that's ok. Experienced - no transfer fee involved so hopefully a little money still there if they did need to try to buy a player. Still plenty of time and I suspect one or two more might arrive next week when the lads return from their tour. Good start.

I like his updated wikipedia...

"Following his release from QPR Hughes made a great decision and signed a one year contract with 2014-15 Championship winners Brighton and Hove Albion, really smart move Aaron"

This is what my QPR mate said of him -

Honestly, just totally unexciting in every way imaginable. Reasonably solid but no pace and no ability on the ball

Dunne and Hill ahead of him, and they now have the Premiership dosh.. It's not that they didn't rate him, I imagine he would have made the starting 11 for most Championship clubs last season, just to happens QPR had an insanely good squad.

Here's an example where they played against each other from 2007. Liverpool beat Fulham 2-0.
There was a superb individual goal where a certain Fernando "Torres twisted and turned to get the better of Aaron Hughes, before beating goalkeeper Antti Niemi with a low shot."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/7076645.stm

They also played against each other in 2003 when Northern Ireland played Finland and Hyypia earnt his 50th cap
http://www.uefa.com/news/newsid=53684.html
Hyypia inevitably scored and Finland won 1-0. NI nearly equalised towards the end but "but Aaron Hughes just failed to get a vital touch"
