So if I lived in, say, Handcross and normally supported Brighton, if they played Crawley I should support Crawley as they're my local team?

no you would support Brighton, you have already abandoned Crawley, it all about loyalty to your home town mate nothing else

So people from Shoreham or Saltdean couldn't support Brighton?

not saying they could'nt, TBH I don't give a monkeys who supports who, I have always been loyal to my home town/city I have always supported the Albion when I have had the finances to do so, and travelled 1000's of miles to do so when I was younger
you want to support Shoreham or Saltdean you are welcome to do so.
Brighton is still a city to be proud of
and I quite like Eastbourne too

Ironically, by the measure of supporting the team from the town/city one is from, someone from Falmer who lives only a few yards from the Amex, would not qualify!

Frank Skinner said this in a stand up. You are born, you get a map out, find the nearest team and that is you set for life no matter what.

That would be me lost to Grimsby Town.

I would be mortified if this was rigorously applied. My son was, through no fault of his own, but through necessity, born in St Mary's in Portsmouth, and we could hear that **** with the handbell when Pompey were playing at home whilst we were in the intensive care unit. Had to wait 9 weeks till I could bring him home to Sussex. I will have failed as a father if he grows up supporting that shower of shite.

Me too. My boy was born in Winchester and I'd be devastated if he decided he was going to support Southampton, I hate them!

Surely following your old mans team is acceptable?! I've been looking forward to taking him to the Amex since we knew we were having a baby and he's had every baby item that's been released in the club shop since he was born!

Exactly. If I was born and bred in Croydon then I would be a Palace fan. I do actually have a fair bit of respect for Palace fans because it would be so easy to support Chelsea or Arsenal via a short train journey.

That's what I find somewhat strange about a Londoner supporting a northern glory team when they could choose from Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, I mean that's taking glory hunting to a whole other level. Agree about Palace fans, you have to respect them for their choice, and for having to put up with Premiership glory hunters in the home stands when the big name teams come to Selhurst..

Ironically my local premiership team is now Liverpool but I wouldn't bother going to see them if the tickets were free (in fact it have turned down free tickets to do so). I find watching as a neutral totally boring.

But I wouldn't be supporting my home town would I? In my example I'm not from Brighton but I've chosen to support them. Anyway, personally speaking, if you're only 'allowed' to support your home town I'm stuck supporting Palace then. Oh well ...

There are some circumstances where there is an alligience to clubs from generations gone by. And as long as it's because someone's grandad or something was from X place and therefore supported his LOCAL PROFESSIONAL team I don't see a problem with it.

I personally think you should support your local pro team to where you were born or where you live etc. it's easy to spot a glory supporter in Sussex - any of the 'big' prem clubs - and I don't give a **** if it's a London club like Arsenal or a northern one like Man U it's still the same principle. My old man always followed Cov (his local team growing up) and still holds a soft spot - but lived here since going to uni and started watching the Albion and is now as Albion as you get. Difference is he was never a glory supporter and it's always been the local team to where he lived...

So, Tommy Elphick, born & brought up in Woodingdean, shouldn't support Liverpool, or Adam El-Abd, from Saltdean, shouldn't be a Forest supporter?

It happens.

Just cos they're pro footballers doesn't make an ounce of difference to me. Not sure the reasons for El Abds but Elphick is a glory supporter and should be treated with the contempt that you'd treat any glory supporter (largely ignore anything they say about football!)

Even though he went to matches, & wasn't just an armchair fan?
