It's so depressing watching England these days - a paper thin bowling attack, a really feeble batting top order, and continually clueless captaincy. We won't lose this one because of Bairstow's innings, but I expect us to struggle in what really feels like a "division two" test match. :nono:

This England lineup cannot compare with one from even just 10 years ago. Maybe Root gets in to the 2012 team, none of the others...

I would offer one further disagreement and suggest Wood maybe gets in as the third seamer ahead of Bresnan / Tremlett / Finn. Other than that completely agree.

One of the experts on Talk Shite yesterday said we had the 4th worst tail by runs scored in World Cricket, I'm assuming the top order is pretty much the same !

Get so irritated by players like Holder, averaging 29 v everyone else, 38 vs England and not bad with the ball either, we make him look like effing Sobers though.

Not sure about Bresnan, he was a underrated bowler and reliable, and his batting meant you could play Broad, Anderson and an actual spinner if you wanted and not worry too much about their lack of runs.

That's the same argument that is used to justify Woakes' selection. I'm not convinced that it's way to go - you pick your best bowlers and best batters. You shouldn't have to rely on a No 8 to score runs

I don't disagree entirely but I think you have to have some balance and England and Sussex have been at this best when we've had 8s that score decent runs (Giles, Bresnan, Swann,RMJ,). The issue is if you don't have a pace bowler that doesn't score runs England have a habit of making do with part time spinners

Also I think Woakes probably is the 5//6 the best England bowler at the mo, which with injuries puts him in the team. I'd have him as bowler over Overton all the time

I would have thought our tail outscored the top order over the last year at least.

I agree. A test bowling average of 30 and a batting average of 27 is better than Bresnan in both departments, and considering Broad and Anderson have been dropped we need his experience.

I've aligned my working hours with the Test. Work on two screens, the Test on the other. I strangley find myself more productive. Test cricket is such a mood lifter.

Jack Leach bowling well with little assistance or reward, a shame none of the others can back him up.

Or just run them out, IDK…

Wonderful glovework by Foakes to effect the run out. A specialist keeper makes such a lot of difference. Well done Pope as well
