.... when counties and major cities analysed.

Yorkshire is top, followed by London, Lancashire, Buckinghamshire, Edinburgh,
Glasgow, Essex, Glamorgan, Aberdeenshire and Hertfordshire.

West Sussex are joint 31st (with one silver)and East Sussex joint 37th (with one bronze).

Why are we so low? Poor sports facilities or our laid back easy living?

No decent football or cricket teams teams to support in Yorkshire so they may as well do something themselves I suppose.

think it has more to do with the government helping deprived northern areas by building the centers of excellence there

I'll start caring when west or east Sussex compete alone in the Olympics...

I blame Archer and Bellotti. It was those two who took the county's main athletics stadium away from the potential champions who might have won gold, if only they'd had a seven-days-a-week facility for training.

It might just be something to do with the lack of ANY decent sporting facilities in Brighton, which is the major city of Sussex.

Exactly. Facilities aren't everything, but
They do play a big part. I'm at Sheffield Uni, and within 10-15 minutes bus/walk/cycle, we have Ponds forge, Don Valley, an Ice Rink at Sheffield Motorpoint and so much more. You come back here, and look at Sussex Uni's Gym, compared to those at Northern Uni's, and then the cost of memberships at places like Withdean and Prince regent gyms (council run), £40 odd a month, and very little else council run.

Indeed. Sporting facilities are so much better and cheaper up north than down here. It is one of the things the north is far superior to than the south.

Who cares? The counties make up one nation and those nations make Great Britain.

I like being able to do sports in decent facilities as apposed to becoming a sedentary, lazy, overweight individual who is useless at any form of sport. That is why I care.

I'm not lazy ,overweight or sedentary I still do contact sports I'm in my 40s. I just don't care where the medal winners come from. North,South,East,West what does it matter we're all British.

I think it's good to see Yorkshire doing so well. They are, by nature, proud but modest folk, who will let this pass without comment or boastfulness. As a rule they rarely bring up their county in conversation and are loath to let any success go to their heads.

A little known fact is that Michael Parkinson is from Yorkshire. I'm sure many will be surprised to learn this as he rarely mentioned it on his chat show.

Well I didn't know that.

Might you also know if the fella that does Saturday Kitchen (the one with two forenames) comes from there? It's just that if he has possibly mentioned whatever county he happens to be from, say 9 or 10 times during one episode of his show, then I must have been making tea or having a piss all of those times....
