Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has launched a passionate defence of his beleaguered side, effectively accusing Stoke City's players of deliberately going out to inflict injury on his team during the newly promoted club's 2-1 win over the Gunners on Saturday.

Theo Walcott and Emmanuel Adebayor both miss Wednesday night's Champions League Group G clash with Fenerbahce at the Emirates Stadium as a result of challenges by Rory Delap and Ryan Shawcross respectively.

Not only is Wenger furious with the challenges, but also with subsequent comments that claimed Arsenal were lacking a spine in their fight for the Premier League title.

Thomas Sorensen, the Stoke goalkeeper, claimed that Arsenal "lack that bit of spine you need" but Wenger, whose side have dropped points against Sunderland, Tottenham, Stoke and Hull, retorted: "For me the brave one is not the one who tackles from behind the player who tries to play football, that is the coward.

"All I can say is they [Arsenal's players] are brave and, for me, you need to have more courage to play football when you know that someone is tackling you from behind without any intention to play the ball.

"The only intention is to hurt you and I can show some tackles where I can prove what I say. The one who is tackling is not the brave one. For me the brave one is the player who is trying to play football.

"It happened at the weekend. Do you think Delap tried to play the ball when he tackled Walcott? Or that Shawcross tried to play the ball when he tackled Adebayor off the pitch? All the players have been injured deliberately.

"I am not ready to listen to things that are completely untrue and make people who are cowards, for me, look brave."

Wenger’s outburst provoked a predictable response from Stoke. Peter Coates, the Stoke chairman, said: "I am really very disappointed in what he has said.

"That wasn't the game I saw, it wasn't the game the fans at the ground saw and it wasn't the game that the referee saw. I really am disappointed in him and I couldn't really disagree with him more.

"There was only one player who got sent off in that match and that was an Arsenal player (Robin Van Persie). Things happen in football, we don't have nasty players in the team who go out to injure players and we don't want that."

"Perhaps he (Wenger) has had a difficult few days with his results, there is a lot of pressure in football and I think it could be a manifestation of that."

Altogether now....... Ahhhh, diddums. Did the big nasty northern bullies get too physical for you

Now teams will just target them, if they didn't before, knowing how brittle they are.

Watch out Arsene, Villa will be breathing down your neck soon enough.

Wengers a serial whinger for sure.
But if Forster and Murray had got crocked by the challenges that put Walcott and Adebayor out of the game, I would be mightily MACKED off as well.

Pasty, I totally disagree with you.

I come from an Arsenal-hating family but even I have to admit Wenger's teams always try to play football the way the beautiful game should be played, and his players have been victims of agricultural tackles.

I also admire him for sticking to his footballing principles. It's amazing Arsenal are still such a force having sold many of their big players and having bugger-all cash to spend after financing The Emirates.

That said, his comments are clearly those of a man feeling the pressure.

Odd how his opinion of Robin Van Persie's pointless, childish, straight red seems to have been overlooked by Arsene "didn't see it" Wenger. You know, the moment of idiocy which means he's now ruled out of the Man Utd game.

I wonder why?

The tackle on Adebayor which has put him out for three weeks was disgusting, I'd be fuming if that had happened to one of our players.

I wonder why he is feeling the pressure though, he surely has a job for life there?

I know the performances haven't been great lately but surely even Arsenal fans aren't that fickle.

Because he's probably been disciplined behind closed doors.

No manager has a job for life, and Wenger is professional enough to know that in a results business no trophies in 3 years with a new stadium to pay for creates problems. Whereas there was once little to choose between them and Man Utd there is now clear blue water, and Chelsea have come along and elbowed them out of the way in the process.

If the Delap foul on Walcott had happened the week before a big England match I suggest some posters might be more sympathetic to Wenger.

If Wenger changed his principles the Premiership would lose it's most entertaining team so I'm 100% behind him condemning the cloggers of the Premiership as Arsenal are the only team that I'll make an effort to watch in the top flight.

So he whinges occasionally, small price to have pay to listen to him when you consider how his teams play the game.

Harsh. The top four and Aston Villa all play fantastic football.

some absolutely disgraceful challenges in that match.

Adebayor out for 3 weeks and after seeing what happened to Eduardo I think Wenger's got every right to kick off.

wenger was right, the tackles were disgraceful. if murray, elphick and forster were all taken off in a game due to injuries caused by tackles from behind it would be mayhem on here...

and to whoever said he looked over the van persie incident is just wrong. he said it was a stupid thing to do and he shouldn't have done it...

My view ...........

The tackle on Wallcott is something you see most weeks - a professional foul that gets a booking but normally does not put players out of the game. He was unlucky though getting an arm injury from a tackle like that ! End of story for me.

The one on Adebeyor was late, looked intentional & had awful consequences. Again though, I see tackles like these in games every week which don't cause major injuries. Stoke player should be punished further for the " off thew pitch " tackle. Did he REALLY intend to take the player out of the game though ( as Roy Keane did on Haarland or whoever it was ? )

However, what annoys me is the way Wenger moans about it being only against Aresnal players that these tackles occur. He forgets the poor record Arsenal used to have under him when Viera played !!

Bad tackles should be taken out of the game for ALL footballers, not just Arensal's, although I do think we're heading towards the sport being " non contact. "

I'd take Wenger's complaints a bit more seriously if he wasn't the manager of the team that has gathered most red cards in the history of the PL.

Petulance is not the same as GBH though and although I have no idea if I'm right, I imagine most to the Arsenal ones were for handbags (except Viera's)

I think he had a point with one or two of the tackles but on Sky sports they showed the tackles while he was talking. He moaned about the Sagna one when there wasn't even contact with the player.

Personally I think he knows his team are losing touch with the other 3 and is looking for excuses.
