Do kids play this abroad? If so, what do they call it?

And why was 'Headers & Volleys' sometimes pre-fixed with the word 'German'? What made German Headers & Volleys different to the normal one?

Very nice to have a game named after our second home.

I think Wembley (the game) is one of the worsts thing to happen to football in this country. As a game, it has done more to hold back the footballing technique of British children than anything else apart from wall ball.

I hated the game when I was a kid! Lots of hanging around waiting for rounds to finish if you'd gone through or if you were out, the game generally was not very enjoyable for someone who plays as a defender (like me), lots of goal-hanging, not much teach work or passing involved, and a waste of time considering we could have been playing a proper game!

I bet it's not popular outside the British Isles!

I've either gome compeletly mad or you're talking about some other game. My recollection of Wembley was that it was a board game not a table football game so there was no technique involved.

I've not played it for 40 years so I could be a bit hazy on this - there was another game I played at the time called Soccerama and get I remember nothing about that.

The only things I do remember about Wembley is that my parents bought it for me as a reward for passing my 11+ and that I got it on the day that Sussex beat Gloucestershire in the Gilette Cup semi.

Ha! Yes, your reward for a mazy dribble through your mates and MULLERING the ball past the 'keeper was 10-15 minutes sat behind the goal among the bags / packets of crisps / bottles of pop etc

Slightly O/T here:

The whole way that kids are taught to play the game in this country is wrong!

Go to any kids game on a Sunday and as soon as one of the defendes gets it all you hear from the sides is "CLEAR IT" "HOOF IT" which makes kids panic on the ball and doesnt get them used to having the ball at their feet.

Go to Europe and every player is encouraged to run with the ball if there in their own box or in the middle of the pitch.

That is why teams like Spain, France etc have skillfull players in all areas of the pitch and are comfortable to run with the ball!

There is too much pressure on winning in the kids game and although its nice to win games, trophies etc there needs to be more emphsis(sp) on the technical side of things!

Ali, increrasingly there is nowadays. The shouts of hoof it from the sidelines most likely won't be from the coaches but from the parents.

Goldstone rapper, kids play wembley in japan. wallball can be quite a skillful game if you make the target fairly small.

Indeed, quite often you'd have to miss on purpose* just so thay you could play a bit longer.

And I loved wallball.

*that's my story and I'm sticking to it

Adding to the way we play football in this country, going back a few years our school team had a tour of Barcelona and played a few games against local schools, our team were a good side county champions etc. But these spanish kids were different class compared to us they also play games on a gravelly surface to encourage players to keep the ball on the floor and to discourage slide tackles.
