Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Obviously you weren't at Cheltenham on Saturday, otherwise you would know that Virgo's aerial threat up front made the difference in the 2nd half. Short, passing football in midfield is great to watch but with the midfielders we've got, it's not always going to be the best option.

Depends which team you are facing, surely? Tactics should vary, but we are very one dimensional at the best of times.

No fair point i was not there sat. But it sounded like on the radio that they hoofed it without a big bloke up front and hence went 2-0 down. Hoofing it is very poor at any time (never mind a team in the bottom four) but to do it without a target man is e stupid to the point of negligent.

Hoofing is not the answer. We passed it last year, so what changed this year - Adams, and 3rd div journeymen footballers.

"If god had meant football to be played in the air then he would have put grass up there" Brian Clough

Sorry but if Adams hoofs it on Sat then I will join in the Adams out stuff He has had half a season and hoofing rubbish must go - or he must

Agreed - and that's why I said 'not ALWAYS the best option'. When you're up against decent opposition, it sometimes makes sense to have a target man to get on the of the long ball. Ideally it wouldn't be a converted central defender, but Virgs is the best we've got in the target man department. It hasn't always worked this season, but that doesn't make the tactic wrong in the right circumstances.

sorry mate I don't agree. Hoofing, and percentage football went out with Graham Taylor, white socks, and Bros. About time Adams took the hint. Pass and move, they did it under Wikins, now drop the donkeys and play the footballers, like last year

at last maybe the old adams is starting to be born again....

Virgo was injured, we shall see on Sat and see if he tells the team to hoof it or get cox on the ball and play football. Big game for Adams, if he hoofs it then I for one will have a go. If they play football, then i will cut him slack.

Great point tonight, however I think we must start winning to pull Yeovil back into this dog fight! Though I reckon Walsall may join us soon in this fight, they are falling fast and friends say they are shocking!

High up on the South Downs.
4-5-1 Cox on the ball is what came out on the radio but I was not there. In 4-5-1 there is no option but to pass it.

The 2000/01 team usually played 4-5-1 with BZ the lone striker.

I don't remember us being that much of a passing team last season. We tended to hit it in the channels for Forster and Murray. The best passing performance in recent years was at Leyton O when we won 4-1 with the Wilkins diamond system and Hammond and Bertin ruled the game.

Micky got the substitutions right at Cheltenham and the team right tonight. Lets hope we can win two of the next three games.

Football, like any sort of management, requires a blend of principle and pragmatism - it's no use adopting Clough's philosophy unless you have the players to carry it through. The fact is that most of the time we did not 'pass and move' under Wilkins - not because he didn't aspire to play this way but because we didn't have the players to do so (with the possibile exception of when George O'Callaghan was here).

MA has usually tried to play more directly at all his clubs: his 2000/01 championship winning team played 1 up front (BZ) and the likes of Cullip, Watson, Jones and Oatway often looked to hit him with the long ball. An accurate and timely long ball isdeployed by most great teams when appropriate and is very different from 'aimless hoofing', an instruction which I very much doubt Micky gives to his players!

I don't think we have the personel to play pretty passing football though (Unless Jarrett/Birchall makes our midfield go from awful to competent). Until this month we almost had no one who seemed to have the ability to pass forward in midfield.

I'm slightly surprised by the thread starter but good to see Adams is getting the acknowlegement he should after yesterday's game. Far more threads on wanting Adams out after a crap game, but not mant wanting to start threads on giving credit where it's due.

Maybe - maybe not but was the team was forced on Adams because Virgo was injured?

If Virgo was fit he would have lumped him up front and told the players to play hoofing nothing balls up to him. As such, credit to the players who have shown Adams that the team should be built around skillful players like Cox, ect - yes the players that Wilkiins picked and Adams dropped for hoofers.

Hopefully Adams has seen that hoofing must go, and we must play short passing football through midfield. Ive not joined in the Adams out shouts at home but if he continues to hoof it then I will

What?? Not well done Adams for the tactics. It's the players that hoof, if you remember there was a lot of hoofing last year as well.

And I don't know if you went to Cheltenham, but 'lumping' Virgo up front caused them all sorts of problems, leading them to bring on another defender because they couldn't handle the pressure from Virgo, he was winning most the balls.

It was sad to see all the players and staff self congratulate each other on the pitch after a great result. They were celebrating like they had beaten one of the big 4, only for the sad realisation of having to go back into the changing room to find out they had moved in to the relegation zone.

The fans were in great voice for the 10minutes I was there and it looked like hardly anyone had left before the final whistle and gave the team a great reception when they walked over towards us
